SOMIS, Calif. — After a tough first round. the Sacramento State men's golf team tied for the best team score in the second round and is in seventh place at the Bill Cullum Invitational on Monday at The Saticoy Club.

Sacramento State finished the first round at 13-over and was tied for 11th place. The team was led by Zach Mate who shot a 1-under par round of 71. Mate opened on the fifth hole with a par before a birdie on No. 6 and a bogey on No. 7. He moved back under par with a birdie on the par-3 second and jumped to 3-under after his ace on No. 13. Mate parred eight of his last nine holes with the exception being a double bogey on the par-5 18th.

Jake Aberle and Luke Dugger each shot 76 in the first round. Aberle's round was comprised of four birdies, six bogeys and a double bogey. Dugger was 1-under through his first 11 holes behind a birdie on the par-4 11th and 10 pars. He played his final seven holes at 5-over after two bogeys and a triple bogey on the par-5 18th.

Zach Matzke completed the team score in the first round with a 78. Matzke was 4-over at the midway point of his round and played his last nine holes 2-over. He had three birdies, two bogeys and a triple bogey during those holes.

Gabriel Smith shot 81 in the morning with two birdies, three bogeys and four double bogeys.

The second round saw Aberle shoot 71 to pace the team. The sophomore overcame a double bogey on his first hole (No. 8) but later moved to 2-under following birdies on Nos. 14, 1, 2 and 3. After consecutive bogeys on the next two holes, he birdied the par-4 sixth to close at 1-under. Aberle is tied for 19th for the highest individual standing on the team.

Dugger and Smith each shot 73 in the afternoon. Dugger was even through 13 holes with two birdies and bogeys. He bogeyed the par-4 first hole and then parred his last four holes to end his day. Smith was 2-over after his first six holes but began his comeback with birdies on the par-5 14th and par-4 15th. He had a pair of birdies and bogeys to remain even before a birdie on the par-5 sixth to get to 1-under. Smith's round ended with a double bogey on the par-4 seventh.

Matzke had three birdies and five bogeys in his second round to finish with a 74.

Mate was just three strokes off the lead following an even-par round in the afternoon but was disqualified after signing an incorrect scorecard. Mate will be able to return to action on Tuesday and can have his score from the third round counted toward the team total.

Host CSUN holds a 7-stroke lead over North Dakota State in the team standings. Hawaii and UC Riverside are tied for third (nine shots behind CSUN) while Cal State Fullerton is one stroke back of the pair.

UC San Diego's Davis McDowell shot 66 in the second round and was 2-under during the day. McDowell leads four golfers by one stroke and has eight others within three strokes.
