LAHAINA, Hawaii — Zach Mate shot a career-best round of 65 and moved into a tie for seventh place following the second round of the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate on Friday.
Mate had an amazing eight birdies during his round to get to 6-under par on the day. He opened with two pars and then bogeyed the par-4 seventh to take him to 1-over. A birdie on the par-5 ninth and a bogey on the next hole kept him there until a birdie on the par-4 11th. He moved under par for the first time during the round with a birdie on No. 13 but found himself even again with a bogey on the par-3 15th. From there, Mate birdied six of his final seven holes. His score is the lowest by a Hornet this season and the best since
Casey Leebrick shot 64 at the Big Sky Championship last season.
Jeffrey Perry took advantage of a strong start to shoot 69 on Thursday. After beginning with a par, Perry eagled the par-5 sixth and then birdied Nos. 7 and 8 to make him 4-under. A birdie on the par-4 10th placed him at 5-under which was his low point. He finished the back nine by playing the last eight holes at 3-over with a bogey on No. 12 and a double bogey on No. 18. Once back on the front side of the course he birdied No. 1 and bogeyed No. 2 before closing with a pair of pars.
Gabriel Smith followed his first round score of 66 with a 73 and is tied for 36th place with Perry. Smith was even through his first seven holes with a birdie on No. 7 and a bogey on No. 8. Back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 11 and 12 moved him to 2-over where he stayed until a birdie on the apr-4 18th. He ended his round with par-bogey-par on Nos. 1-3.
Luke Dugger and
Jake Aberle each totaled 74 to complete the lineup. Dugger had three birdies and six bogeys. Aberle carded a birdie, two bogeys and a double bogey.
Liberty extended its lead to five strokes and stands at 34-under through two rounds. East Tennessee State and Oklahoma are tied for second while North Florida (23-under) and San Jose State (22-under) complete the top five.
Sacramento State is tied with Kansas for ninth place. The two teams are just two strokes back of Boise State for eighth and six back of Georgia and Hawaii for sixth place.
The Hornets will play the final round with Kansas, Louisiana and Gonzaga on Saturday. The teams will have a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. PT.
