All five Hornets end the openind day at even par or better

LAHAINA, Hawaii — Gabriel Smith set his career best with a 5-under par round of 66 on Thursday at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate. Smith helped lead all five of Sacramento State's golfers to scores of even par or better as the team finished with a total of 276 to stand at 8-under.

Smith started the round with a birdie on the par-3 eighth hole and never returned to even at any point during the day. A birdie on the par-4 13th was followed by a bogey on No. 14 to leave him 1-under. He added birdies on the par-3 15th and par-4 16th to get to 3-under. Three holes later, he birdied the par-5 fifth to move to 4-under. His second bogey of the round came on the par-4 fourth but Smith then eagled the par-5 sixth to get to 5-under. His score tied him for eighth place and has him three strokes off the individual lead held by North Florida's Robbie Higgins/

Zach Mate shot 69 to rank second on the team and is tied for 27th in the field. Mate was 1-over through his first 10 holes before a birdie on the par-3 17th  took him back to even. Following two pars, he birdied No. 1 and added another birdie on the par-4 fourth to move to 2-under.

Jeffrey Perry shot 70 to finish the first round at 1-under par. Perry began the round on the ninth hole and had birdies on Nos. 12 and 17 to go along with 12 pars on his first 12 holes. A double bogey on the par-4 fifth momentarily returned him to even before he birdied No. 6 to get back into red numbers.

Luke Dugger and Jake Aberle each shot 71. Dugger fluctuated between 1-under and 1-over throughout his round. He finished with four birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey.

Aberle started the day with a birdie on No. 9 and then parred the next eight holes. Bogeys on Nos. 18, 4 and 5 raised his score to 2-over before he also eagled No. 6 to fall back to even.

Liberty shot 22-under as a team and holds a 4-stroke lead over Georgia. San Jose State is third at 15-under while East Tennessee and Oklahoma are tied for fourth at 12-under. Sacramento State is tied for seventh place.
