STANFORD, Calif. -- Sacramento State senior
Jan Silva made an impressive run at the ITA Northwest Super Regionals, winning his first three singles matches before falling in the semifinals.
Silva advanced to the Super Regionals by virtue of going 4-0 in Regional play two weeks ago.
All four opponents he played at Super Regionals were from Pac-12 Conference schools, and he defeated a pair of ranked opponents along the way.
That included a victory over the 41st ranked player in the nation - Cesar Bouchelaghem of Washington - by a 6-4, 7-6 (5) score in the Round of 16. He also beat 113th ranked David Cierny of Oregon by a 7-6, 5-3 score in the Round of 32. In the quarters, he defeated Cal's Alex Chang, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, before falling in the semis to 29th-ranked Samir Banerjee of Stanford, 7-6, 6-0.
Between Regional and Super Regional play, Silva went 7-1, and five of those victories came in straight sets. In addition, he was 4-1 against Pac-12 opposition.
Fellow senior
Mark Keki also played in the Super Regional singles draw, falling to Guillaume Dalmasso of Santa Clara in the Round of 32 by a 6-3, 6-2 score. Keki teamed with
Mate Voros in the doubles draw, but the duo fell in the Round of 16.
"Jan has played incredible tennis all month, and beat some very good players along the way," Sacramento State head coach
Kevin Kurtz said. "He continues to get better, is confident, and playing a high level."
Sacramento State returns for its final fall tournament on Nov. 3-5 at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton.
