PHOENIX -- Sacramento State's season came to an end with a 4-0 loss to Idaho State in the Big Sky Conference Tournament on Thursday morning at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
The Hornets (11-12) were the No. 6 seed at the tournament while Idaho State (11-9) was the No. 3 seed. The Bengals will advance to Friday's semifinal round while Sacramento State is eliminated.
The Hornets, playing without No. 1 singles player
Martin Duris (injury), used two freshmen and three sophomores in today's singles lineup. The match was stopped when Idaho State secured the necessary four points for victory.
The Bengals began the match by winning the doubles point, posting victories at No. 1 (6-4) and No. 2 (6-3).
All six singles matches were close, as No. 1
Freddie Healey (6-3, 3-6, 6-3), No. 2
Nick Bowles (7-6, 6-4) and No. 3
Doni Gashi (6-3, 6-4) each fell. Matches for the Hornets'
David Dai (No. 4),
Sebastian Vlahos (No. 5) and
Yoav Levy (No. 6) were each stopped. Vlahos dropped the first set in his match, 7-5, while both Dai and Levy were in the third set of their matches.
One of the youngest teams in the Big Sky, the Hornets do not have a senior on the roster, and feature just one junior (Gashi).
The team concludes the season with an 11-12 overall record, including an 8-4 mark at home. The Hornets beat Portland State on the final day of the regular season to clinch the sixth and final spot to the Big Sky Tournament.
Bowles finished the spring season 14-6 in singles play, and was an honorable mention all-Big Sky selection. Duris finished 11-6, and Healey was 10-7.
