SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State's
Luke Dugger set the school 54-hole scoring record relative to par and the second lowest three-round total in school history at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational on Wednesday. Dugger shot 66-66-71-203 over three days to finish at 13-under par. His 54-hole total of 203 ranks only behind
Casey Leebrick who had a 202 at last year's Big Sky Championship on a par 70 course.
Dugger finished tied for Washington State's Preston Bebich for second place in the tournament. The pair were one stroke back of Cal State Fullerton's Tegan Andrews who shot 71-68-63-202 to become the medalist.
Dugger started his final round with birdies on the par-4 first and par-5 second holes. He ten parred the next five holes before his only bogey of the day came on the par-3 eighth. The graduate student parred his last 10 holes to finish at 1-under for the day. His three-round total was three strokes better than his previous low which came last season while competing for Holy Names. The tie for second marked his seventh career top five finish as a collegiate student-athlete.
Zach Mate and
Jeffrey Perry each shot 73 to tie for second among Hornets during the round. Mate was 2-over on the front nine with a birdie on the par-5 second and a triple bogey on the par-4 fifth. He parred the first two holes on the back side of the course before a birdie on the par-4 12th. Mate immediately followed with a bogey on No. 13 but played his final five holes at 1-under with a birdie on the par-5 16th and four pars. He tied for 21st with a total of 71-67-73-211.
Perry found himself at 3-over par at the midway point of his round with bogeys on Nos. 1, 8 and 9. He returned to even over the back nine with birdies on Nos. 11, 15 and 16. After a par on the 17th, he bogeyed the par-4 18th to close at 1-over. His total of 74-79-73-226 tied him for 81st overall.
Gabriel Smith tied for 77th at 73-77-75-225. His third round was comprised of a double bogey and bogey on the front nine to leave him at 3-over. He played his final nine holes even with the help of three birdies to offset three bogeys.
Jake Aberle matched Perry's total to tie for 81st. Aberle had two birdies, two bogeys and a pair of double bogeys on Wednesday.
Grand Canyon defended its team title and won this year's tournament by eight strokes. The Lopes were 14-under par as a team in the final round and finished 37-under over three days. LMU was second at 29-under and were followed by Utah and Washington (both 28-under) and Fresno State (23-under) in the top five.
Sacramento State will close the fall portion of its schedule on Oct. 26-28 at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational in Hawaii.
