MORAGA, Calif. -- Sacramento State hit a season-high .348, had 11.0 team blocks and controlled the match from start to finish in a three-set sweep (25-12, 25-18, 25-20) of Saint Mary's on Wednesday evening at UCU Pavilion.
The Gaels' largest lead of the evening was one point, as Sacramento State was never really threatened in either of the three sets. Saint Mary's was limited to a .117 hitting percentage, and all four Hornet opponents have hit below .225 this season.
Sacramento State improved to 2-2 while Saint Mary's, which was playing its home opener, dropped to 0-3. The Hornets snapped a four-match losing streak against the Gaels as Sacramento State beat Saint Mary's for the first time since 2006. The Hornets have always played well on the road against Saint Mary's as the team is now 15-2 when playing in Moraga.
Making the sweep even more impressive is Sacramento State was playing without two injured starters in outside hitter
Bridgette Smith and rightside
Karlee Soderberg. Both missed tonight's match with injury. Smith is the Big Sky Conference leader in kills per set.
Starting in place of Smith was true freshman
Greta Davis, and sophomore
Ellie Tisko played in place of Soderberg. Both were very good as Davis had a team-high 10 kills while Tisko posted seven kills and a .400 hitting percentage.
The most dominant player on the floor all evening was middle blocker
Kalani Hayes who could not be stopped. She had eight kills, a career-high .800 hitting percentage (8-0-10) and four blocks. Hayes is now hitting a Big Sky-best .474 this season.
Sacramento State had 11.0 team blocks despite the match lasting just three sets. That includes setter
Ashtin Olin stuffing the stat sheet with six blocks, five kills, a .714 hitting percentage and 14 digs. Olin has now posted a double-double in all four matches this season.
Also for Sacramento State,
Caitlin Volkmann had nine kills, a .300 hitting percentage and seven digs,
Caty Cordano posted 11 digs, and
Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin led all players with seven blocks. Kamba-Griffin is now averaging a team-best 1.56 blocks per set, the fourth best mark in the Big Sky.
The Hornets return to action on Saturday when they play at home vs. San Jose State at 2 p.m.
