SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A school record, six event victories and 26 top five finishes headlined a strong day of performances by the Sacramento State track and field team at the Hornet Invitational on Saturday.
The large meet featured athletes from 23 schools as well as several unattached and club entries. Rain was predicted throughout the day but after a wet start to the steeplechase in the morning, the storm held off until the final event of the day.
The Hornet scored 124.5 points to finish first in the team standings. UC Davis was second with 103 and was followed by Fresno Pacific (64.5), Weber State (59) and Southern Oregon (39) in the top five.
Fresno State claimed the women's titles with 131 points. Fresno Pacific (86), UC Davis (74), Nevada (79) and Sacramento State (62) completed the top five.
Sacramento State will next compete at the ASU Invite on Friday and Saturday in Tempe, Ariz.
MEN'S FIELD HIGHLIGHTS
- Evan Stork broke his own school record in the hammer throw and easily finished first in the meet. Stork threw 216-00 on his first attempt and won the even by an amazing 34-feet, 7-inches. His throw also broke his previous school record of 212-10 which was set at last season's Big Sky Championships.
- George Harris and Sawyer Howard joined Stork in the top three of throwing events. Harris was third in the hammer with a toss of 175-00. Howard was third in the shot put following a best of 50-05.50. Harris was also fifth in the discus at 150-05.
- Freshman Miles Grant placed second in the high jump after clearing 6-06.00.
- After winning the triple jump at the Aggie Opener, John Gibbs placed third on Saturday with a best of 46-11.50.
WOMEN'S FIELD HIGHLIGHTS
- Abby Meder and Breanna Espinoza each set career bests to place among the top five in the shot put. Meder had a mark of 43-10.75 to place fourth and put her beyond 43 feet for the first in her career. Espinoza was fifth at 42-09.00.
- Jayla Flowers had a 5.5-inch improvement from the first outdoor meet of the season and finished fourth in the triple jump at 38-11.50.
MEN'S TRACK HIGHLIGHTS
- The duo of Blaize Holland and Jabari Reynolds combined for six top five finishes, including three wins. Holland finished first in the 200 in 21.42 while Reynolds was fourth in 21.81. The pair reversed roles in the 400 with Reynolds winning with a PR of 47.61 and Holland placing third in 49.07.
- Holland and Reynolds were also part of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams. The 4x100 finished was edged at the line to place second with a time of 41.53. The 4x400 team crushed the field to win by 4.5 seconds.
- The team had two others top five finishers in the 400 with Khalil Fowlkes and Nautus Moore placing fourth and fifth. Fowlkes ran 49.16 while Moore had a time of 49.21.
- Aiden Maddison and Shane Marshall were second and third in the 5K. Both set PRs with Maddison running 14:52.61 and Marshall crossing in 15:08.07.
WOMEN'S TRACK HIGHLIGHTS
- Cagnei Duncan won the 800 with a PR of 2:13.94. Duncan shaved nearly six seconds of her previous best which came back in 2019. Sarah Collier finished fourth in the event in 2:15.17.
- LaTrouchka Duke was third in the both the 100 and 200. Duke ran 11.78 in the 100 and 24.52 in the 200 in her first outdoor competition of the season.
- Hailey Rutter was third in the 5K and set her PR by over 13 seconds.
- Danielle Gee was fifth in both the 5K and the steeplechase. Gee set her personal best in the 5K with a time of 17:42.35.
- Kameryn Brown was fourth in the 100-hurdles in 14.72.
