BOZEMAN, Mont. — The Sacramento State men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2022 Big Sky Indoor Track & Field Championships with three student-athletes competing in the multi events on Thursday.
Abby Sheets finished in 12th place in her first collegiate pentathlon. The freshman opened the competition with a personal best 9.62 in the 60-hurdles. That time was over two-tenths faster than her best this season in three meets. She then moved to the high jump where she cleared 5-00.50 before a shot put of 37-11.25. Competing in the shot put for the first time this season, Sheets' mark was the fifth best in the field. A long jump of 17-02.00 also set a PR and bettered her previous best by 15.5 inches. Sheets wrapped up the day by running the 800 in 2:36.67.
She totaled 3,318 points and missed the top eight positions by just 100 points. The pentathlon was won by Idaho State's Ashley Sturgis who scored 3,774 points. Brianna Hagler of ISU was second with 3,740 giving the Bengals 18 points in the team standings.
The first four events of the heptathlon also took place on Thursday. Jack Charlton and Joshua Braun find themselves in 13th and 17th place, respectively. Charlton ran 7.39 in this first collegiate 60-meter dash and then set a PR in the long jump at 19-07.00. That distance was 8.5 inches beyond his previous best. He had the fifth-best shot put in the competition with a mark of 38-07.75 and closed the day by clearing 5-08.75 in the high jump.
Braun ran 7.50 in the 60 and also set a PR in the long jump with a best of 20-02.50. Following a shot put of 27-00.50, he high jumped 5-03.00.
Weber State's Caleb Whitney holds the lead after the first day with 3,020 points, Race Treat of Eastern Washington is close behind with 2,912. Charlton has 2,507 points through four events while Braun has 2,179.
The final three events heptathlon will take place on Friday morning. The main program of the meet will also get underway during the day.
