Box Score SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State dominated in all facets of the game, never trailed, and scored 49 second-half points on the way to an 83-51 victory over Idaho on Thursday evening at the Nest.
The Hornets did everything well, shooting 57% from the field, outrebounding the Vandals, 35-28, and limiting Idaho to 33% shooting. In fact, Sacramento State had huge advantages in points off turnovers (24-4), points in the paint (42-18) and fast break points (23-7). The Hornets never trailed, led by as many as 35 points, and led by double figures the final 19:48.
Leading, 34-25, at halftime, Sacramento State opened the second half on a 13-0 run and never looked back. The Hornets had a huge second half, outscoring the Vandals, 49-26. Defensively, Sacramento State had nine blocked shots (two shy of a school record) and forced 16 Idaho turnovers.
Sacramento State, which shot 57% from the field, 47% from the 3-point line and 80% from the free throw line, has now scored 80+ points in back-to-back games. That includes an 80-75 win last Saturday at Idaho State. The last two games have been two of Sacramento State's top three point totals this year against a Div. I team.
The Hornets have won two straight games while improving to 8-16 overall and 4-13 in the Big Sky Conference. In the midst of their final homestand of the season, Sacramento State appears to be peaking just in time for the Big Sky Tournament in a couple weeks (March 9-12 in Boise).
Idaho (8-19, 5-12) had its three-game winning streak snapped. The Vandals had been playing their best ball of the season, with consecutive impressive wins over Weber State, Montana and Eastern Washington. Sacramento State and Idaho split the season series as the Vandals won by a point in overtime in Moscow on Jan. 22.
Four Hornets scored in double figures, led by Bryce Fowler's 23 points and four assists. William FitzPatrick continued his torrid shooting with 15 points and seven rebounds on 5-for-7 from the 3-point line. Over the last three games, the senior sniper is averaging 17.6 ppg on 56% shooting (14-25) from distance.
Cameron Wilbon had 15 points, two steals and an electrifying dunk early in the second half over Idaho's 6-foot-10 forward Tanner Christensen. Zach Chappell added 12 points and seven assists (just one turnover), and center Jonathan Komagum had eight points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Fellow center Hugo Clarkin had four blocked shots as the two Hornet bigs combined for seven stuffs.
Sacramento State used 13 players in tonight's game and four others cracked the scoring column - Rick Barros III (3), Elijah McCullough (3), Chris Holley (2) and Clarkin (2).
The Hornets will play their final home game of the season on Saturday vs. Eastern Washington at 7 p.m. Seniors Fowler and FitzPatrick will be honored prior to the game.
