PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team wrapped up the fall portion of its schedule by finishing 16th at the Saint Mary's Invitational on Wednesday at Poppy Hills GC. The Hornets shot 296 in the third round for its best score of the three-day tournament.
Riley Bell recorded his second consecutive even-par round of 71 and placed 33rd with a total of 78-71-71-220. Bell started on the 10th hole and parred his first five holes. He moved to 2-over with bogeys on Nos. 15 and 16 but finished the backside of the course with a birdie on the par-5 18th. Bell started the front nine with five pars but had the streak snapped with a bogey on the par-3 sixth. He returned to even with birdied on the par-4 seventh and eighth and wrapped up the event with a par on No. 9.
Bell led the team during the fall with an average of 72.20 in 15 rounds. He was even or below par in five of his final six rounds of the season.
Zach Mate had the second best score on Wednesday for the Hornets, shooting in 74 to finish at 3-over par. Mate had six pars and two bogeys over his first eight holes before an eagle on the 515-yard par-5 18th. He fell to 1-under with a birdie on the par-3 second but followed with a double bogey No. 3 and bogeys on Nos. 4, 5 and 8. Mate concluded his round with a birdie on the par-5 ninth and ended the tournament tied for 83rd.
Jeffrey Perry shot 75 on Wednesday and tied for 77th overall. Perry had the best start on the team, birdying Nos. 10 and 11. However, he was 2-over at the midway points of his round after a triple bogey on the par-3 15th and a bogey on No. 16. He started the front nine with a birdie on the first hole to move 1-over but had bogeys on Nos. 4-6 before ending with three pars.
Coleman Dupre and
Casey Leebrick each shot 76 to complete the team total. Dupre had the second best finish on the team as he tied for 69th with rounds of 76-78-76-230. During the third round, he had birdied on his first and last hole as well as four bogeys and two double bogeys. Leebrick had 15 pars, a bogey and two doubles on Wednesday.
San Diego was the only team to finish below par during the final round and won the tournament by 16 strokes. USD finished at 7-under with a total of 845 while Colorado State (861), Saint Mary's (864), Loyola Marymount (865) and Santa Clara (868) completed the top five.
Sacramento State will start its spring season at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Hawaii on Feb. 16-18.
