SACRAMENTO -- Junior Alexis Johnson rebounded following an opening round defeat to claim the Red Flight consolation singles title, while several Hornets made deep runs in both singles and doubles over the weekend as the Sacramento State women's tennis team wrapped up play at the three-day Saint Mary's Fall Invitational at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex in Moraga, Calif.
After falling to the No. 7 seed in the main draw, Johnson rolled through the first three rounds of the consolation bracket, defeating opponents from the Academy of Art, Pacific, and Santa Clara in straight sets, before outlasting San Francisco's Qianer Qiu, 6-1, 0-6, 10-5, in a marathon to win the title.
Sophomore Grace McSkimming and newcomer Julia Moraes nearly set up an all-Hornet finale in the Red Flight singles main draw, both advancing to the semifinals before falling to a pair of seeded opponents.
Moraes, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, won each of her first three contests in straight sets, including victories over opponents from Portland and Fresno State and an upset of No. 3-seeded Zoe Clydesdale-Eberle, 6-3, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. She met the tournament's No. 2 seed in Portland's Alaia Rubio Perez in the semifinals, extending the contest to a third set before falling, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-2.
McSkimming, meanwhile, opened with a, 6-0, 7-5, win over the Pilots' Kylie Canubida and proceeded to pull off upsets over the flight's No. 8 seed — Cal Poly's Eliza Bates (6-2, 6-3) — and top-seeded Arianna Capogrosso of San Francisco, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, to punch her ticket to the semis. There, she met another seed in No. 7 Gabriele Tevez of host Saint Mary's, falling by a 6-4, 6-3, score.
In doubles, the tandem of Mayya Gorbunova and Tsveti Yotova reached the championship of the Blue Flight main draw, winning their opener in a tiebreak and cruising through the quarterfinals and semifinals before falling to the fourth-seeded tandem of Maria Martinez Vaquero and Simran Chhabra from San Francisco, 6-4. With wins in three of their four matches over the weekend, the team improved to 6-5 overall together this fall, leading the team in wins through three events.
Overall, Johnson finished 4-1 on the weekend, while Maddy Ferreros, McSkimming, and Moraes each took home three singles wins from the event. All four of the Hornets' doubles teams finished with multiple wins on the weekend, led by the three from Gorbunova and Yotova.
Sacramento State closes out the fall portion of its schedule on Nov. 11-13, heading to Southern California to compete at the CSUN Fall Invitational in Northridge, Calif.
