BERKELEY, Calif. -- Freshman Lou Baudouin took down Cal Poly's Kennedy Buntrock to claim the consolation title in her flight, while the doubles tandem of Weronika Ejsmont and Julia Moraes made a run to the main draw finals of their flight to close out play at the 2022 Cal Fall Invitational at the Hellman Tennis Center and Channing Tennis Courts over the weekend.
After falling in her opening round match to Cal Poly's Peyton Dunkle, 6-2, 6-4, Baudouin made the most of her stay in the Bay Area in her Hornet debut, outlasting BYU's Win Ka Lin, 7-6 (5), 5-7, 11-9, in the first round of the consolation bracket before topping Pacific's MiaAngelina Ruja in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Baudouin then advanced to the final after winning the first set from Fresno State's Mariia Vyshkina, 6-2, before the Bulldog retired to set up her contest with Buntrock, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, to clinch the crown.
In main draw doubles action, Ejsmont and newcomer Moraes made their charge to the finals, opening with a win over the Saint Mary's tandem of Madison Weekley and Olivia Rook, 8-5, before outlasting the Cal Poly pair of Misha Berry and Sasha Ozerets, 8-7 (5).
On Saturday, the duo then took down San Francisco's Hana Gamracy and Azaria Hayes, 8-7 (8-6), in another marathon match, but could not complete their run in Sunday's championship, falling to another Dons pair in Simran Chhabra and Qianer Qiu, 8-4.
In other singles action on the weekend, newcomer Mayya Gorbunova opened her career in the green and gold with a first-round singles win over Gonzaga's Adrianna Sosnowska, 6-3, 6-3, before falling to Stanford's Alexis Blokhina in the round of 16 by the score of, 6-3, 6-0. Moraes and Ejsmont also posted singles wins in their respective singles consolation bracket.
After falling in the first round, Moraes posted her first win as a Hornet with a, 7-6 (5), 6-1, win over BYU's Madison Smith, while Ejsmont took down another Cougar in Yijia Jiao, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7, but both fell in their following quarterfinal matches.
In doubles, the tandem of Johnson and Grace McSkimming opened with a win over the Saint Mary's duo of Gabriela Tevez and Stefanie Silva, 8-5, but fell to Chhabra and Qiu, 8-5, in the quarters.
Sacramento State returns to action in two weeks, making a return trip to the Bay Area to take part in the ITA Northwest Regionals hosted by Stanford on Oct. 14-16.
