STOCKTON, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team recorded its second consecutive under par round at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational on Friday at Stockton Country Club. A day after totaling a team score which was 7-under par, the Hornets were 2-under on Friday and are tied for seventh place entering Saturday's final round.
Riley Bell had the low score on the team during the round, shooting 68 to finish the round at 3-under. Bell is currently tied for seventh place overall with a 36-hole total of 137. Bell opened Tuesday off the first hole and was 2-under through five with birdies on the par-5 second and par-4 fifth. He made the turn at 1-under following a bogey on the par-4 ninth and returned to even with a bogey on the par-4 12th. Bell rebounded with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13 and 14 to get back to 2-under. A par on No. 15 was followed by a bogey on No. 16 but Bell ended his round with birdies on his final two holes.
Casey Leebrick was 1-under in the second round and is tied for 20th overall. Leebrick had a pair of bogeys and birdies on the front nine to leave him even through nine holes. He birdied the par-4 10th and then ran off eight straight pars to close his round.
Jeffrey Perry finished even in the second round with a round of 71. Perry was 1-over through five holes before birdies on Nos. 6-8 took him to 2-under. He finished the front nine with a bogey and remained at 1-under until a birdie on the par-4 12th. After three pars, he had bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17 and closed with a par.
The final countable score came from freshman
Zach Mate who shot 73. Mate parred his first 10 holes but saw the streak end with bogeys on Nos. 11 and 12. After four more pars his round finished with a bogey on No. 17 and a birdie of the par-4 18th.
Fellow freshman
Coleman Dupre shot 76 on Thursday. Dupre had one birdie, four bogeys and a double bogey in his round.
Sacramento State was also represented by a pair of individuals who each had fantastic opening rounds of 68. On Tuesday,
Gabriel Smith shot 74 and is now tied for 36th while
Keaton Sutherland shot 75 and is tied for 46th. Smith had four birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey in his second round. Sutherland had two birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey.
Grand Canyon maintained the team lead and will take a 4-stroke edge into Saturday over second-place UC Irvine. The Anteaters had the low round of the day finishing at 8-under as a team to help them move up five spots. San Jose State is third, Fresno State fourth and Washington State and George Washington are tied for fifth.
Jakub Hrinda of GW shot 62 in the second round and is now 10-under through 36 holes which places him first. Hrinda is one shot ahead of GCU's Matthew Braley atop the leaderboard.
Sacramento State's third round will begin off the first tee at 7:45 a.m. The Hornets will be paired with Cal State Fullerton and Pacific in straight tee times.
