STANFORD, Calif. -- Sacramento State freshman Lou Baudouin advanced to the round of 16 in the main draw singles bracket, while the tandem of juniors Mayya Gorbunova and Tsveti Yotova also advanced to the round of 16 in doubles play, headlining the Hornets' run at the 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Northwest Regionals hosted by Stanford over the weekend.
Baudouin, who claimed a consolation singles title in her flight at the Cal Fall Invitational earlier in the month in her Sacramento State debut, became the first Hornet woman to reach the round of 16 at the regionals since Tatsiana Kapshai did so in 2011 as the No. 10 seed before falling to the Golden Bears' Jana Juricova. Meanwhile, the duo of Gorbunova and Yotova accomplished a feat that no other Hornet doubles team had done since 2015 when Deimante Bulatovaite and Alina Soltanici reached the round of 16 at that year's regional event.
Overall, Baudouin finished 3-1 on the weekend, opening the tournament with a tough three-set victory over Santa Clara's Varya Zlotnik, and following that up with a straight set, 7-5, 6-2, win over San Jose State's Olaya Bances Iglesias. Baudouin then pulled off an upset in the round of 32, taking down ninth-seeded Hikaru Sato of Washington in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, before running into California's 50th-ranked Jessica Alsola, who ended the run with a, 6-2, 6-0, victory in the "Sweet 16."
Gorbunova and Yotova opened their own run by outlasting Pacific's Alexis Sam and Tomi Main, 8-7 (5), and cruising past Seattle University's Liliya Dimova and Elena Kraleva, 8-3 in the round of 32. The duo then fell to Stanford's fifth-seeded team of Alexandra Yepifanova and Alexis Blokhina, 8-4. Blokhina is ranked No. 5 in the ITA's preseason freshman/newcomer rankings in singles.
Joining Gorbunova and Yotova in the win column in doubles was the tandem of Baudouin and Maddy Ferreros, who took down Pacific's Olivia Wiese and Megan Carmichael, 8-7 (11-9), before running into the tournament's top seed and No. 12-ranked team of Angelica Blake and Connie Ma from Stanford, falling 8-2.
Gorbunova also made a little run in singles play, gaining the round of 32 with wins over Olivia Rook of Saint Mary's in three sets, 1-6, 7-5, 6-0, and San Francisco's Rita Colyer in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4. Weronika Ejsmont also posted a win in her first round match in the main draw, defeating San Jose State's Lara Marco Mas, 6-3, 7-5, and Maddy Ferreros also won a pair of contests, defeating Fresno State's Leann Serna, 7-5, 6-4, and Portland's Aleksandra Dimitrijevic, 3-6, 6-1, 11-9.
Sacramento State resumes its fall schedule on Oct. 28, heading to Moraga, Calif., to take part in the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational which runs through Oct. 30.
