VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN FOUR AT NEVADA

RENO, Nev. -- Sacramento State hit just .109, and Nevada had 13 more kills on the way to a 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-16, 25-22) victory over the Hornets in the first round of the Nevada Volleyball Classic on Thursday at Virgina Street Gym.

Sacramento State will play one more match at the three-day tournament, and that will take place tomorrow afternoon vs. CSUN at 3 p.m.

The Hornets could never really get the offense going, as the team had 40 kills with 26 errors in 129 swings. Sacramento State did not hit above .189 in any of the four sets. Nevada had more kills (53-40), assists (53-37), digs (55-40) and blocks (11-10).

The Wolf Pack (2-8), who were playing their first home match of the season, saw four players finish with at least nine kills, Sacramento State, playing the first of a stretch of six straight games away from home, dropped to 4-5 overall.

Hornet sophomore Caitlin Volkmann played well, finishing with a team-high 13 kills to go with a .333 hitting percentage and two blocks. Junior middle blocker Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin posted a career-high nine kills which accompanied team highs in hitting percentage (.353) and blocks (4). Kamba-Griffin entered the match as the nation's 21st best blocker.

Bridgette Smith had six kills and team bests in aces (2) and digs (11) while also registering three blocks. Rightside hitters Karlee Soderberg (5 kills, 2 blocks) and Ellie Tisko (3 kills, 2 blocks) combined for eight kills and four blocks.

Sacramento State welcomed back setter Ashtin Olin who missed the previous five matches with injury, and team employed its 6-2 offense the first three sets of the match. Setter McKenna Smith had 24 assists and five digs, while Olin finished with 11 assists. Libero Caty Cordano had nine digs and Kalani Hayes three blocks.

For Nevada, Reka Monteleone led all players with 16 kills.
