SOFTBALL SWEEPS THREE-GAME SERIES OVER NORTHERN COLORADO, OPENS BIG SKY PLAY 3-0

Box Score

SACRAMENTO -- Sophomore Marissa Bertuccio threw seven strong innings, and sophomore Lewa Day homered for the third straight game as Sacramento scored three unanswered runs to beat Northern Colorado, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

The victory allowed Sacramento State to sweep the three-game series over Northern Colorado, which included a pair of wins yesterday at Shea Stadium. The two teams were playing their first Big Sky Conference games of the season, and the Hornets have now started 3-0 in league play for the first time since 2016. In addition, the Hornets are 9-6 at home, and have won five of the last six at Shea Stadium.

Today was another comeback win, as the Hornets erased a 2-0 deficit one day after overcoming a 4-0 deficit in yesterday's nightcap victory. Here are some highlights from today's game and the series:

• Bertuccio was impressive for the second straight day. One day after yielding two runs in seven innings, she had a similar line today. The sophomore allowed just five hits with two runs, one walk and one strikeout. She retired each of the final 12 batters she faced, and her only blemish was a two-run homer off the bat of Maddee Blood-Smyth in the second inning. Bertuccio threw 112 pitches while improving to 7-7 with a 3.10 ERA. In her two wins against Northern Colorado, Bertuccio had a 2.00 ERA and Bear hitters batted just .180.

• Day homered in all three games of the series. That included a shot to left-center field today that cleared the fence by at least 50 feet. The solo homer in the third inning tied the game at 2-2. In three games during the series, Day was 4-for-9 with four runs, three homers, six RBIs, 13 total bases, a 1.444 slugging percentage and .500 on-base percentage. Each of her home runs yesterday were two run shots that went to the opposite field. Day has accounted for six of the Hornets' seven home runs this season.

• Sophomore Haley Hanson had a big series, going 6-for-11 with two runs and a pair of stolen bases. Her two-out, RBI-single in the second inning got the Hornets on the board and cut the deficit to 2-1. Hanson also had a big role in the team's third run, doubling with two outs in the fourth inning. The next batter, Charizma Guzman, drove her in with a single in what turned out to be the game-winning run.

• Joining Hanson with multiple hits was Carley Morfey who was 2-for-2 with a walk and a double. Morfey led off the second inning with a single, and Katie Vretzos, who pinch ran for Morfey, would eventually score. Morfey finished the series 5-for-9 with two doubles, a homer, three RBIs, 10 total bases and a .600 on-base percentage.

• The 2016 team, which started 4-0 in league play, swept North Dakota at home before taking a game on the road at Montana. The best mark for a Hornet squad in Big Sky play was 6-0 during the 2015 season.

• Offensively during the series, Sacramento State hit .359 with a 2.33 ERA and .967 fielding percentage. Four players hit better than .350 during the series, including Morfey (.556), Hanson (.545), Rylee Gresham (.500), Amber Rodriguez (.500), Day (.444) and Guzman (.375). The Hornets had at least eight hits in all three games of the series.

• For the second straight day, Northern Colorado's Erin Caviness took the loss against the Hornets. Caviness was effective today, allowing eight hits and three runs in six innings of work. The Bears dropped to 4-18 overall and 0-3 in league with the loss.

• Day, Morfey and Hanson hit safely in all three games. Alexis Parish hit safely each of the last two games. Hanson and Morfey both had a pair of multiple-hit games during the series.

• Sacramento State will look to continue its momentum into next week with three more Big Sky games on the road at Montana. The Hornets and Grizzlies will play twice on Friday at noon PT, and a game on Saturday at noon PT.
