Box Score 2 CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Oregon State pitchers Mariah Mazon and Trystan Melancon both threw shutouts to lead the Beavers to a doubleheader sweep of Sacramento State on Friday afternoon at Kelly Field. Oregon State won both games by an 8-0 score, and both were stopped in the sixth inning because of the mercy rule.
The losses dropped the Hornets to 6-13 this season while Oregon State improved to 10-5. It doesn't get any easier on Sacramento State's trip north as the team will play 5th-ranked Oregon on Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m.).
In the first game, Mazon (7-1) threw a six-inning perfect game, striking out 13 Hornets. That includes striking out 10 of the final 12 batters she faced. The reigning third team All-American set down all 18 Sacramento State players in order.
The Hornets' Alyssa Nunez (1-3) was effective in the circle, allowing six hits and a pair of earned runs over five innings. Sacramento State committed four errors in the game, as six of the Beavers' eight runs were unearned. Carley Morfey also pitched, throwing two-thirds of an inning.
In the second game, Sacramento State's offense remained cold as Melancon (2-1) threw a no-hitter with one walk and 11 strikeouts over six innings. The lone Hornets to reach base came on a walk to Kailie Hargis and a hit batter to Aliyah Robles.
Marissa Bertuccio (5-6) took the loss for the Hornets working the first 2.1 innings, followed by Kelsey Alcantara (3.0 ip) and Morfey (0.1 ip).
