Box Score SACRAMENTO -- Nevada scored 10 runs on 12 hits against three Sacramento State pitchers on the way to a 10-0 victory over the Hornets in the fifth and final game of the NorCal Softball Kickoff.
The Wolf Pack, who improved to 4-1, scored three times in the second, once in the third, four more in the fourth, and twice in the fifth inning to enforce the eight-run mercy rule. Sacramento State had just two hits off three Wolf Pack pitchers, and both of those hits belonged to center fielder Charizma Guzman.
Sacramento State concludes the three-day, season-opening tournament with a 2-3 record, which includes doubleheader splits with California Baptist on Friday and Saint Mary's on Saturday. The Hornets played all five games at home.
Nevada, which swept a doubleheader at UC Davis on Friday, improved to 4-1. Like the Hornets, the Wolf Pack also split a doubleheader against Saint Mary's among its other outcomes.
Eight different Wolf Pack players had hits off Hornet pitchers Marissa Bertuccio (2.0 ip), Alyssa Nunez (1.2 ip) and Skylar Mitchell (1.1 ip). Bertuccio (2-1) got the loss, allowing four runs. It marked just the second time in her career she allowed more than three earned runs in a start. Bertuccio remains the owner of wins in both Hornet victories as she dominated California Baptist on Friday and Saint Mary's on Saturday.
The big blows for Nevada were home runs from Lauren Gutierrez and Kenzi Goins. Nevada also left nine runners on base as the Wolf Pack had hits in every inning. The team used three pitchers - Julia Jensen, Blake Craft and Kendall Fritz - and Craft got the win, allowing one hit and no runs in two innings of relief.
For the Hornets, Lewa Day went 0-for-2 and had her four-game hitting streak snapped. Aliyah Robles worked a walk in the fifth inning, and has now reached base safely in four straight games.
Sacramento State will play four games next week, including a road doubleheader at Saint Mary's on Friday at noon, and a home doubleheader against California on Saturday.
