GAME 1
Sacramento State rode the arm of Bertuccio and the power of Day as Sacramento State cruised to an 8-0 win over Saint Mary's. The game was stopped after the Hornets scored four times in the sixth inning because of the eight-run mercy rule. Bertuccio, who had a complete-game victory yesterday against CBU, tossed a four-hit shutout while throwing just 69 pitches. She allowed four harmless singles and faced just five batters over the minimum while lowering her season ERA to 0.54
The Hornets got on the board in the third inning when Day hit a three-run homer well over the left field fence despite a stiff wind blowing in. The mammoth blast, which scored Katie Vretzos and Alexis Parish, gave the Hornets a 3-0 lead. Sacramento State tacked on another in the fifth on a successful squeeze bunt from Parish which allowed Aliyah Robles to score from third.
The Hornets scored four times in the sixth on three runs, highlighted by a bases loaded walk to Robles, an RBI-grounder from Charizma Guzman and an RBI-single from Parish.
Bertuccio improved to 2-0 while Sofia Earle (1-1) got the loss for Saint Mary's. Earle worked the first five innings. Parish had two hits while Day, Shea Graves, Kailie Hargis, Robles and Guzman also collected hits.
For the season, Day, the Hornets' No. 3 hitter, is batting .500 (4-for-8) with four runs, a double, two homers, six walks, five RBIs, three stolen bases, a .714 on-base percentage, 1.375 slugging percentage and a 2.089 ops.
GAME 2
Saint Mary's scored at least one run in four of the first five innings and used two pitchers to keep Sacramento State's offense from breaking out as the Gaels won by a 6-3 score. SMC scored once in the first, three times in the second and once in the third to take a 5-0 lead.
After an RBI-single from Vretzos got the Hornets within, 5-1, the Gaels tacked on another in the fifth. Sacramento State, which left nine runners on base, cut the deficit to 6-3 in the fifth inning on a double steal allowing Vretzos to score from third, and a Snow RBI-double plating Day.
Saint Mary's did a better job of taking advantage of its opportunities, finishing 8-for-15 with runners on base and 4-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Conversely, Sacramento State went just 4-for-17 with runners on, and 3-for-11 with RISP.
The Gaels' Eryn McCoy (1-1) earned the win, allowing three runs while working around six Hornet hits and four walks over 4.2 innings. Kayla Scott earned her first save, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Carley Morfey (0-1) got the loss for Sacramento State, pitching the first 2.1 innings. Alyssa Nunez was effective in relief, limiting the Gaels to just one run and five hits over 4.2 innings.
Vretzos finished 2-for-4 while Parish, Day, Morfey, Snow and Haley Hanson also had hits.
