Box Score SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Senior Bryce Fowler's three-point play with 6.8 seconds left delivered Sacramento State a 58-57 road win at Cal Poly on Monday evening at the Mott Athletics Center.
With Sacramento State trailing, 57-55, a Cameron Wilbon steal with 31 seconds to play gave the Hornets life. That's when the Hornets let fifth-year senior, and fifth-year starter Fowler go to work. He dribbled the clock down to 10 seconds before making his move. Fowler raced hard to the rack, swooped in between two Cal Poly defenders and converted on an off balance layup with the opposite hand white being fouled. He would covert the free throw to give Sacramento State the one-point lead.
Cal Poly's Jacob Davison (a transfer from Eastern Washington) missed an off-balance 18-footer from the left wing, and the ball bounced off the rim as time expired.
In a game that featured nine ties and nine lead changes, it was Sacramento State that outscored Cal Poly, 36-31, in the second half. No team led by more than six points the entire way. Both teams didn't shoot particularly well, but the Hornets made the big shot when they needed it most. Fowler's three-point play gave him a team-high tying 14 points, and the swingman has now led or tied for the team lead in scoring in all three games.
The win allowed Sacramento State to improve to 2-1 on the young season, and gave interim head coach Brandon Laird his first Hornet road win. Cal Poly dropped to 1-2. Two years ago, the Hornets beat Cal Poly by nearly an identical score (57-56) at the Nest.
Sacramento State took its largest lead of the game at 53-47 with 4:40 to play, but proceeded to go over four minutes without a field goal. During that stretch, Cal Poly went on a 10-2 run, and a pair of free throws from Camren Pierce gave the Mustangs a 57-55 lead with 1:22 remaining. Both teams then went a possession without scoring, setting up Fowler's winning drive to the bucket.
The Hornets shot just 38% (18-47) from the field and were outrebounded, 39-28. However, Sacramento State buried six 3-pointers and went 16-for-22 from the free throw line. That included a 10-for-11 mark in the second half. Cal Poly shot 42% (21-50) from the field, but just 2-for-13 from the 3-point line and 13-for-20 from the charity stripe.
Fowler's 14 points accompanied five rebounds, three assists and a steal. He was joined in double figures by William FitzPatrick who notched 14 points (3-6 3FG) and four rebounds in a game-high 36 minutes. Teiano Hardee also tallied double digits with 11 points and five boards. Zach Chappell scored nine points, and that Hornet foursome combined for all but 10 of Sacramento State's points.
Wilbon had five points and a very important steal, and, on his birthday, Jonathan Komagum had two points, six rebounds and three blocked shots. Hugo Clarkin added a pair of points and rebounds.
For Cal Poly, Trevon Taylor led the way with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Sacramento State, which finished up a stretch of two road games in three days, will get some well deserved rest before returning to play at home on Saturday vs. UC San Diego. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
