With the victory, Sacramento State improved to 15-11 overall, 11-4 at home, and 9-6 in the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets have won seven straight at home, and each of those outcomes have resulted in three-set sweeps. Sacramento State has not lost a match in the Nest in over a month.
Overall, the Hornets have won seven of their last eight matches, and have moved into a two-way tie for fifth place in the league standings with Northern Arizona. Only one match remains in the regular season for all 11 teams in the Big Sky Conference, and, based on Saturday's outcomes, the Hornets could either be the No. 4, 5 or 6 seed for the Big Sky Tournament Nov. 18-20 in Ogden, Utah. The single elimination tournament will feature the No. 1 seed playing the No. 8, and 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6, and 4 vs. 5 in the quarterfinal round.
Montana, which had won three of its last four, dropped to 11-14 overall and 6-9 in league play. The Grizzles had also been 3-3 on the road prior to today's matchup. Sacramento State was able to avenge a loss it suffered earlier this season to the Grizzlies in Missoula (Oct. 16).
The Hornets did not trail until the third set, as Montana held a late 17-16 lead in the frame. However, Sacramento State ended the set on a 9-2 run, and took home the victory.
The Hornets had 11 more kills (45-34) than Montana, put up 11.0 team blocks, and dominated throughout. The Grizzlies had 34 kills with 20 errors, and hit below .110 in both the second and third frames.
Sacramento State middle blocker Cianna Andrews had a big match, finishing with 10 kills, six blocks and a massive .818 hitting percentage. Her 10 kills came in 11 swings, and her six blocks were a match high. She was joined in double-figure kills by Bridgette Smith who posted 13 kills, seven digs, two blocks and a .281 hitting percentage. The sophomore outside hitter has 19 matches with 10-plus kills this season, and has now accomplished the feat 28 times during her career.
Middle blocker Kalani Hayes had five kills, five blocks and a .571 hitting percentage, Macey Hayden six kills, Caitlin Volkmann five kills, two blocks and a .312 hitting percentage, and libero Caty Cordano had a match-high tying 13 digs to go with six assists.
