ANOTHER SWEEP! VOLLEYBALL COMPLETES PERFECT FIVE-GAME HOMESTAND WITH WIN OVER IDAHO STATE

Box Score

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State limited Idaho State to a .118 hitting percentage and used a late run in the third set to sweep past the Bengals, 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 27-25), on Saturday evening inside the Nest.

The victory completes one of the more memorable homestands in recent memory. The Hornets dominated their season-long five-match homestand, sweeping all five opponents, and limiting opponents to a combined .151 hitting percentage. Sacramento State swept the first, second and third place teams in the Big Sky Conference standings, ended Weber State's 10-game winning streak, put a stop to Portland State's seven-game winning streak, and halted Northern Colorado's three-game streak. In addition, the Hornets beat a Boise State team that entered the matchup with a 15-8 record.

In the process, the Hornets, who were coming off a road loss to Montana prior to the homestand, saw their conference record go from 3-5 all the way to 7-5. Sacramento State (13-10, 7-5) has moved into a fourth-place tie in the league standings with Montana State. The top eight teams in the 11-member Big Sky qualify for the conference tournament in Ogden, Utah (Nov. 18-20). Sacramento State has four matches remaining on the regular season schedule, and has already qualified for the postseason event.

The five-game winning streak is the program's longest since the 2018 season, and the team also improved to 10-4 at home. That includes six straight wins inside the Nest - all coming via three-set sweep.

Idaho State dropped to 6-18 overall and 2-10 in league play. Sacramento State avenged its five-set loss earlier this season to the Bengals in Pocatello. The Hornets have now won eight straight against Idaho State at home, and the Bengals have not won in Sacramento since 2014.

The only real nail biter came tonight in the third set when the Hornets used a 7-2 run to close after trailing, 23-20. That included saving a set point as 24-23. Sacramento State didn't hit great (.146), but finished with seven more kills than Idaho State (36-29) while also tallying 10 aces and 10 team blocks. Three players combined for nine of those 10 aces, including Bridgette Smith (career-high 5), Macey Hayden (2) and Caty Cordano (2).

Speaking of Cordano, she finished with a match-best 18 digs, and completed a sparkling week that saw her average 6.50 digs per set over two matches. Eight of her digs this evening came in the tightly contested third set.

Hayden finished with nine kills, nine digs and a .350 hitting percentage. The senior has hit at least .300 in three of the last four matches.

Smith had nine kills and five digs, and Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin posted six kills and four blocks. Middle blocker Kalani Hayes led all players with six blocks while fellow middle Cianna Andrews added three stuffs. Rightside Caitlin Volkmann posted five kills and four blocks, while setters Ashtin Olin (20 ast, 9 digs) and McKenna Smith (14 ast) combined for 34 assists and 11 digs. Sarah Falk added a kill and a block, and Michelle Taynton one dig.

There were no players in tonight's match from either team to finish with double digits in kills.

Sacramento State will play its final regular season road matches next week on Thursday at Portland State (7 p.m.) and Saturday at Northern Arizona (6 p.m.).
