Box Score SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State hit a season-high .350, led by Caitlin Volkmann's 14 kills and .737 hitting percentage, on the way to a three-set sweep (25-16, 25-22, 25-19) of Boise State on Saturday afternoon inside the Nest.
Today's win wrapped up an incredible five-day stretch that saw Sacramento State sweep three opponents that entered the week with a combined 43-15 record. That included home sweeps of Portland State (Tuesday) and Northern Colorado (Thursday), two teams that were both 7-1 in Big Sky Conference play. The three victories kicked off a season-long five-match homestand for the Hornets that extends into next week.
Sacramento State, which was playing its final non-conference match of the season, improved to 11-10. The victory also avenged a 3-0 loss earlier this season to Boise State (Sept. 11) at the Sacramento State Invitational. The Hornets are now 8-4 at home this season, and have won four straight in the Nest. All four of those wins have been sweeps.
The Broncos, members of the Mountain West Conference, dropped to 15-8 with the loss.
The Hornets finished with 45 kills and just 10 errors in 100 total attacks. Volkmann could not be stopped, as her 14 kills accompanied zero errors in 19 attacks. The .737 hitting percentage was a career high, and she had six kills in eight swings during the third frame. Also hitting for a high percentage was middle blocker Kalani Hayes, who hit .429 with eight kills and five blocks. Hayes had five kills in six swings in the third.
Sacramento State was in control the majority of the match, closing the second set on 7-2 run after trailing, 20-18. The Hornets held Boise State to a .184 hitting percentage, and the Broncos had seven less kills than Sacramento State (45-38). The Hornets also had seven aces, and repeatedly threw the Broncos out of system with tough serving.
Volkmann was the only player in the match with double digits in kills. Bridgette Smith had eight kills, two aces and six digs, and fellow outside hitter Macey Hayden posted seven kills, nine digs, two blocks and a .300 hitting percentage. Setters Ashtin Olin (22 ast, 8 digs, 1 ace) and McKenna Smith (16 ast, 5 digs, ace) combined for 38 assists, 13 digs and a pair of aces. Libero Caty Cordano led the Hornets with nine digs.
Sacramento State finished with eight team blocks, as rightside hitter Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin had four blocks to go with her three kills. Middle blocker Cianna Andrews added five kills and three blocks. Michelle Taynton had two digs and an ace. Six different Hornets had aces in today's matchup.
Sacramento State concludes its homestand next week with matches on Thursday vs. Weber State, and Saturday against Idaho State. Both will begin at 7 p.m.
