STANFORD, Calif. - Sacramento State competed in the 2021 ITA Division I Women's Northwest Regional Championship last weekend, held at the Taube Family Tennis Center on the campus of Stanford University. Led by veteran returner, Paige Alter, six Hornets players combined for seven wins in the rain-shortened regional tournament.
Last weekend's tournament at Stanford was the third fall event for the Hornets women. They have one fall tournament remaining, the weekend of Nov. 12-14 at CSUN.
Alter, one of Sacramento State's four returners for the 2021-22 season, started the weekend off with an exciting win, defeating Pacific's Cindy Ung in three sets, 6-2, 0-6, 6-3. She added her second win of the weekend on Saturday, defeating a Gonzaga opponent in convincing fashion in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
Tsveti Yotova, another of Sacramento State's veteran returners, also won her first match of the weekend, advancing out of the round of 128 with a straight set win against San Jose State's Olaya Bances Iglesias, 6-2, 6-3. In the round of 64, Yotova very nearly took a set from Cal's Makenna Thiel, but ultimately lost in two sets, 6-0, 7-6 (3).
Alter and Yotova weren't the only Hornets to come away with wins in last weekend's event. In total, five of six players came away with a singles victories.
In addition to Alter and Yotova, Alexis Johnson, Megan Tagaloa, and Grace McSkimming all won on Saturday. Weronika Ejsmont dropped a hard-fought first round match, 7-5, 6-4, against an opponent from Portland State before also dropping a consolation match on Saturday.
Almost all of the weekend's action took place on Friday and Saturday before the incoming rain cut things short.
All of the Hornets' results from singles and doubles play during the tournament can be found below. Sacramento State will compete again in two weeks when the team travels to Northridge for a tournament at CSUN from Nov. 12-14.
