Box Score SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State had 48 kills, 44 assists, 57 digs and 11.0 team blocks in just three sets on the way to a sweep of Northern Colorado (25-23, 25-21, 25-22) on Thursday evening at the Nest.
Tonight marked the Hornets' second impressive win in three nights as Sacramento State snapped Portland State's seven-game winning streak on Tuesday with a three-set sweep. In fact, over the last three days, the Hornets have defeated two teams that entered the week with a combined 28-10 overall record and 14-2 league mark. Tonight snapped Northern Colorado's four-match winning streak, and the Bears dropped to 15-5 overall and 7-2 in the Big Sky Conference. Both Portland State and Northern Colorado entered the week tied for second in the Big Sky standings.
The Hornets improved to 10-10 overall, 5-5 in league play and 7-4 at home. The team has won five of its last eight matches, and is in the middle of a season-long five match homestand. In addition, the Hornets are now 3-1 at home vs. Big Sky opponents.
With just six conference matches remaining in the regular season, the Hornets sit in sixth place in the conference standings. The top eight teams qualify for the Big Sky Tournament in Ogden, Utah, on Nov. 18-20.
Not only did the Hornets play well in all phases, they also closed each of the three sets in impressive fashion. That included a 4-2 run to close the first, 4-0 to close the second, and 4-1 to finish off the third. Northern Colorado, which entered the match leading the Big Sky in kills per set, was held to a .150 hitting percentage and just 36 kills. In fact, the Hornets had 12 more kills, 11 more assists and seven more digs than the Bears.
The Hornets had five players finish with at least seven kills, led by Bridgette Smith's 14 kills and nine digs. Smith accounted for the Hornets' final three points of the third set with kills. Fellow outside hitters Macey Hayden had nine kills, nine digs and a .333 hitting percentage, and Caitlin Volkmann posted seven kills and five blocks.
Middle blocker Cianna Andrews had a big game with seven kills and a match-high eight blocks, and rightside hitter Tiyanane Kamba-Griffin registered seven kills and three blocks. Setter Ashtin Olin finished with a double-double (16 assists, season-high 14 digs) and McKenna Smith added 19 assists, two aces and six digs. Libero Caty Cordano posted 12 digs, and middles blocker Kalani Hayes had three kills and two blocks.
The Hornets, in the midst of a season-long five match homestand, host non-conference foe Boise State on Saturday at noon. Sacramento State jumps back into Big Sky play next week with home games against Weber State on Thursday and Idaho State on Saturday.
