BEACH VOLLEYBALL DROPS FIRST TWO MATCHES OF THE BIG WEST CHALLENGE

PISMO BEACH, Calif. — Sacramento State opened the Big West Conference Beach Volleyball Challenge with a pair of losses on Friday afternoon at Pismo Beach. The Hornets lost to UC Davis, 4-1, in the early match before falling to tournament host and seventh-ranked Cal Poly, 5-0.

Sacramento State will play six matches over three days as part of a tournament that will see the Hornets play three teams ranked in the AVCA top 10. The Hornets will also play twice tomorrow vs. CSU Bakersfield at 11 a.m. and ninth-ranked Long Beach State at 3 p.m., and return on Sunday to face sixth-ranked Hawai'i and Cal State Northridge. Sacramento State hosted this same event last year as the tournament rotates to a different Big West school's facility each year.

Sacramento State was playing without the services of Paige Swinney (injury) who competes at No. 3 in the team's lineup, usually with Macey Hayden. The injury forced the Hornets to change up their lineups at Nos. 3, 4 and 5.

The Hornets' lone win in doubles play during the afternoon came against UC Davis at No. 5 where freshmen Kayla Subbert and Paige Calvin won their match by a 22-20, 21-17 score.
