MEN'S TRACK & FIELD RALLIES FOR WIN, WOMEN PLACE SECOND AT MONDO TEAM CHALLENGE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's track & field team finished first and the women were second at the Mondo Team Challenge on Saturday at Hornet Stadium.

The Hornet men scored 209 points to pull away from UC Davis late in the meet. The Aggies were second with 115 points and were followed by UC Irvine (75), Fresno State (67) and North Dakota (61). UC Davis won the women's team title with 141 points. The Hornets totaled 135.5 to place second while Fresno State was third with 91. UC Irvine (84) and North Dakota (62.5) completed the field.

The men's team claimed individual titles in eight events. The team did most of its damage in the field where it had the highest finisher in the high jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus and javelin. The women's team had individual wins in the 400-hurdles, high jump and pole vault as well as the 4x400 relay.

Sacramento State will have next weekend off from competition before heading to three meets in Southern California between April 13-15. During that stretch, the team will compete at the Bryan Clay Invitational, the Mt. SAC Relays and the Beach Invitational.

Men's Track Highlights

Eric Adorno placed second in the 100 with a time of 10.65 with a wind of 2.1 m/s. Michael Turner ran 10.76 to place second and Andre Lindsey was third in 10.86. Adorno's time ranks third in the Big Sky this year. Adorno came back to win the 200 and tied his career best by running 21.67. That time places him fifth in the Big Sky this season.

• Freshman Alec Foster placed third in the 400 with a career best of 48.51. That time moves Foster into fourth place in the Big Sky in 2017.

• Andre Lindsey and Aric Walden finished second and third, respectively, in the 110-hurdles. Both athletes had wind-aided marks which set season bests for the Big Sky lists. Lindsey ran 14.19 while Walden had a time of 14.33. The pair entered the meet as the two fastest in the Big Sky. The next closest on the list is Devon Montgomery of Southern Utah who has run 14.68.

• Andrew Stich used a lifetime best of 54.13 to place second in the 400-hurdles. Stich surged over the final 50 meters and nearly caught UCI's Jelani Legohn on the homestretch for the title. Stich's time is the third fastest in the Big Sky this year.

Men's Field Highlights

Kyle Peterson set a personal best to win the shot put. Peterson finished with a mark of 53-09.00 which was 9.5 inches beyond his career long which came at last season's edition of the Mondo Team Challenge. Peterson also jumped into fourth place on the Big Sky performance list this season. Peterson later won the discus competition with a throw of 169-11 which was just two inches off of his career best.

• Steve Pust finished first in the pole vault to lead a sweep of the top three spots for Sacramento State. Pust cleared 15-05.50 to easily set his season high and move to the top of the Big Sky this year. Trevor Hubby was second and also set a season best at 13-05.75.

• A week after recording a wind-aided long jump of 25-00.00 which resulted in him being named the Big Sky Field Athlete of the Week, Michael Turner set a legal mark of 24-06.50 to win the event. That mark moved Turner into a tie for fifth place in school history and was the best by a Hornet since Ronald Brookins went 24-08.50 in 2010. Cory Barger was third in the long jump behind a career best of 23-09.50.

Daniel Onuoha and Darius Armstead went 1-2 in the high jump. Onuoha cleared 6-07.00 while Armstead used a career best of 6-05.00.

• Darius Armstead continued his dominance in the triple jump with his third victory in as many meets. Armstead jumped 51-03.00 and finished 18 inches beyond the closest competitor. He has now gone over 51-feet in two of the three meets this season.

• The team's final victory came from Andrew Stich in the javelin with a throw of 174-06.

Women's Track Highlights

• Senior Joy Weems ran a personal best 55.33 to place third in the 400 and move into eighth place in the Hornet record book. Weems' previous best was 55.50 set two weeks ago at the Hornet Invitational. Her mark is the fastest by a Sacramento State woman since the 2013 Big Sky Championships. Weems' time is also the second fastest in the Big Sky this season.

Jocelyn Orozco ran a career best 2:14.32 to place fourth in the 800. Orozco beat her previous PR by nearly a second (2:15.30) which came last weekend at the Rainbow Relays. Her mark is also the fourth fastest in the Big Sky this year and makes her one of four Hornets ranked among the top five in the league in 2017.

Carly Schulz claimed victory in the 400-hurdles with a time of 1:00.25. Schulz entered the meet as the leader in the Big Sky having previously run 59.86 at the Hornet Invitational. The Hornets also scored points in the event as Cassidy Zurn was fourth and Angelica Cusworth finished eighth.
