MULTIERS OFF TO STRONG STARTS AT BRUTUS HAMILTON

Hornets lead the heptathlon, in the mix in the decathlon to start wide-spread weekend

BERKELEY, Calif. — The Sacramento State track and field teams started a busy weekend, which will see the team compete at four meets, at the Brutus Hamilton Multi on Thursday at Cal.
 
Merle Weber and Jessi Barry rank first and second through the first four events of the heptathlon. Weber has 3,132 total points while Barry is 20 points behind. Weber had the second best mark in the field in the 100-hurdles, high jump and shot put before placing fourth in the 200. She opened the day by running 14.65 in the 100-hurdles and followed with a high jump of 1.67m. She then had a shot put of 11.52m before running 26.00 in the 200.
 
Barry had marks of 14.82 in the 100H, 1.67m in the high jump and 10.29m in the shot put before posting the fastest 200 of the day in 25.07 to set a career best.
 
In the decathlon, Blake Gross leads a trio of Hornets and is tied for second place overall after the first five events. Blake totaled 3,588 points in the five events while brother, Brock, is fifth (3,562) and Cole Oliver sixth (3,520).
 
Blake Gross had a strong start to the day, running 10.77 for the best mark in the field. He added a long jump of 6.56m, a shot put of 10.61m and high jumped 1.74m. Blake ended the day by once again leading the field in 48.89 in the 400.
 
Brock Gross ranked third in the 100 in 10.96 and was also third in the 400 (49.33). In between, he long jumped 6.61m, had a shot put of 11.41m and cleared 1.71m in the high jump.
 
Oliver's best event during the day was the high jump were he cleared 1.92m to rank second. He was also sixth in the shot put (11.91) and eighth in the 400 (51.49).
 
Cal's Luke Buddie holds the lead with 3,762 points. Blake Gross is tied with Alaska Anchorage's Anders Larsen with 3,588 points for second. Brock Gross amassed 3,562 points in the first day while Oliver totaled 3,520.
 
The heptathlon and decathlon will both conclude on Friday. That day will also see Sacramento State athletes compete at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational at Cal, the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, the Stanford Invitational and the Mike Fanelli Classic in San Francisco.
