MEN AND WOMEN EARN TEAM TITLES AT RAINBOW RELAYS

HONOLULU — The Sacramento State men's and women's track & field teams each recorded victories at the Rainbow Relays on Saturday at Hawaii. The Hornet men totaled 104 points to easily defeat Cal State Northridge (58) in the men's race. The women's team scored 172 points to finish ahead of Hawaii (123) and Cal State Northridge (78).

The two teams combined to win 18 individual event and three relay titles during the meet. The women added 41 top five finishes and the men had 38.

Sacramento State will return to action on Friday at the Stanford Invitational before hosting the Mondo Team Challenge on Saturday at Hornet Stadium.

Women's Track Highlights

Amari Jones finished first on the 200 and was second in the 100 to lead the Hornet sprinters. Jones ran a wind-aided time of 25.13 to win the 200 and had a mark of 12.16 in the 100.

Joy Weems was first in the 400 and third in the 200. The senior posted a time of 55.97 to win the 400 by 2.08 seconds. Her time of 25.97 in the 200 left her just .84 seconds behind Jones.

Emma Armstrong and Gracie Albano finished 1-2 in the 5K. Armstrong led the duo in 18:20.51 and Albano ran 18:37.69. Albano was also second in her first steeplechase of the season in 11:48.20. Her time trailed only teammate Haley Heinemann who ran 11:11.23 to win the event.

The 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams each finished first. Kristen Robinson Jones, Carly Schulz and Amari Sperlng combined to run 47.98 to win the 4x100. The team of Cassidy Zurn, Kassandra Corrigan, Schulz and Weems closed the meet by winning the 4x400 in 3:59.08.

Men's Track Highlights

Elijah Changco captured the top spot in both the 800 and 1500. Changco finished one spot ahead of Aidan Schraer in both races. He had times of 1:59.17 in the 800 and 4:13.37 in the 1500 to set season bests in both events.

Eric Adorno posted the fastest time by a Hornet this season in the 200 after running 21.90.

Freshman Alec Foster led a sweep of the top four spots in the 400. Foster ran 48.76 and was followed by Adam Huynh, Karsten Niederer and Alec Acevedo.

Aric Walden ran a season best 14.62 to win the 110-hurdles. Andre Lindsey was second in the 110H (14.81) and was also second in the 100 (11.00).

Women's Field Highlights

Abby Taylor and Nirie Boglino claimed wins in the long and triple jumps, respectively. Taylor jumped 18-03.25 to finish one spot ahead of teammate Kassandra Corrigan. Boglino finished with a long of 36-05.00 in the triple jump while Candice Dominguez was second with a season best of 36-00.25.

Tyhana Cooper won the hammer and was one of four Hornets among the top six in the event. Cooper's best throw was 172-11.

Kathleen Durand improved on her ninth best mark in school history in the discus. Durand threw 151-06 to place fourth in the meet.

Julia Grimm was second overall in the javelin with a throw of 141-05. That distance improved on her personal best but kept her in sixth place in the Hornet record book.

Men's Field Highlights

Daniel Onuoha won the high jump with a season best of 6-09.00. Darius Armstead, Mohamed Abdullah and Max Jette finished second through fourth, respectively.

Steven Pust and Trevor Hubby each set season highs in the pole vault. Pust won the event after clearing 14-11 and Hubby was fourth at 13-05.25.

Michael Turner, Cory Barger and Acevedo claimed the top three spots in the long jump. Turner had a wind-aided mark of 25-00.00. His best legal mark was 23-10.75 and still ranks as the best on the team this season.

A week after setting the school record in the triple jump, Armstead finished first in the event at 48-06.25. He was followed in the top three by Abdullah and Jah Strange.

Trevor Hubby picked up the final victory by winning the javelin with a throw of 189-07 to set his season long.
