Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Trailing, 67-58, with 2:05 to play, Sacramento State scored the final nine points of regulation, and then added the first six points of overtime to eventually defeat Portland State, 80-77, in front of a near sellout crowd on Saturday evening at the Nest.
Things looked bleak for the Hornets after a pair of Calaen Robinson free throws gave Portland State a 67-58 lead with 2:52 remaining. However, that proved to be the Vikings' final points of regulation as Sacramento State ripped off a 9-0 run that began with a pair of Trevis Jackson free throws at the 2:04 mark. A free throw from Jiday Ugbaja (1:29), a 3-ball from Justin Strings and four straight misses from the field for Portland State set up a frantic final moments.
With Portland State leading, 67-64, the Vikings' Deontae North missed a 3-ball with 21 seconds remaining and Strings grabbed the rebound. That set up a 16-second segment that will be remembered for a while. Trying to get the tie and force overtime, Jackson (0:16) and Strings (0:02) both missed 3-pointers but the Hornets kept grabbing offensive rebounds. Ugbaja grabbed the Strings miss and quickly hoisted a 3-ball that missed, but he was fouled with 0.9 seconds remaining.
Ugbaja, who entered the game with 16 free throw attempts all season, calmly buried all three free throw attempts to send the game into overtime at 67-67. Ugbaja wasn't done as he buried a jumper on the Hornets' first possession of the extra session, igniting a 6-0 run that saw the Hornets take a 73-67 lead with 3:18 left. However, Portland State answered with a 10-3 run to take its lone lead of overtime at 77-76 with 1:16 left.
On the ensuing possession, the Hornets got a layup from Eric Stuteville after a beautiful feed from Nick Hornsby to lead, 78-77, with 1:02 left. Then after a Viking miss, Portland State was back on defense. The Vikings eventually got a steal and raced up court with a chance to go ahead with the clock ticking inside 10 seconds. Zach Gengler missed a pull-up jumper from 15 feet and Traylin Farris' tip attempt did not fall either. Nick Hornsby rebounded for the Hornets and was fouled with 2.2 seconds remaining. He made both free throws and a last second desperation heave from Michael Mayhew was off the mark as Sacramento State was able to secure its fourth win in the last five games.
The victory allowed the Hornets to improve to 7-12 overall and 4-4 in the Big Sky. "In the past, we would let 19 turnovers and a difficult deficit really bother us, but tonight were able to overcome and win ugly," Sacramento State head coach Brian Katz said. "It's not always going to be pretty, but sometimes that's how you need to win games.
"Obviously, Jiday was a huge factor tonight, hitting a big 3-pointer (7:40), connecting on three clutch free throws and giving us some scoring in overtime. Also, Trevis (Jackson) was very solid tonight, and I think he and Jiday were the difference in the game."
Sacramento State, which held a 37-28 halftime lead before PSU opened the second half on a 24-7 run, had four players score in double figures. That included Jackson, Stuteville (17 points, 5-of-8 FG, 7-of-11 FT), Strings (11 points) and Marcus Graves (12 points, five rebounds, eight assists).
