ANOTHER ROAD WIN FOR MEN'S HOOPS, THIS TIME AT NORTHERN ARIZONA, 74-62

Box Score

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Highlighted by a 20-0 run, Sacramento State outscored Northern Arizona in the second half by a 47-25 margin on the way to a 74-62 win over the Lumberjacks on Saturday afternoon at the Walkup Skydome.

After NAU's Jordyn Martin converted a layup to give the Lumberjacks a 12-point lead (41-29) with 18:32 remaining, Sacramento State ripped off a 20-0 run which spanned over nine minutes of game clock. Five different Hornets scored during the run, including Justin Strings (8), Joshua Patton (4), Eric Stuteville (4), Marcus Graves (2) and Trevis Jackson (2). A Stuteville layup at the 10 minute park proved to be the final points in the run and gave Sacramento State a 49-41 lead. During the run, Northern Arizona went 9:19 of game clock without a point.

Sacramento State eventually stretched the lead to 16 points and led by double figures the final 5:13 of the contest. In that second half, the Hornets shot .563 (18-32) from the field and .750 (3-4) from the 3-point line while also forcing nine NAU turnovers and outscoring the Lumberjacks in points off miscues (11-0).

Conversely, after NAU shot a blistering 9–for-14 from the 3-point line in the first half, the Lumberjacks were 0-of-9 from long range in the second half. The Lumberjacks also shot just .333 (10-30) from the field in the second half, and their 25 points after halftime were the second fewest allowed by the Hornets in a half this season.

Northern Arizona held a 37-27 lead at halftime, and today marked the first time all season Sacramento State has won after trailing at the half. The Hornets finished the game shooting .508 (31-61) from the field, .500 (4-8) from the 3-point line and had a massive edge in points in the paint (44-16). Sacramento State has now shot at least .500 from the field in four straight games, the team's longest stretch of the season.

Coupled with Thursday's win at Southern Utah, Sacramento State (5-11, 2-3) has won back-to-back Big Sky road games for the first time since beating Idaho State and Weber State on Jan. 22 and 24, 2015. In addition, the Hornets snapped an 11-game road losing streak against Northern Arizona, winning in Flagstaff for the first time since Feb. 26, 2005. Today marked just the third win ever for the Hornets in Flagstaff (3-20).

All of this from a Hornet squad that had been 0-9 away from home this year (0-6 road, 0-3 neutral) prior to Thursday's win at Southern Utah. Today's loss dropped Northern Arizona's record to 3-14 overall and 0-4 in the Big Sky.

Strings led four Sacramento State players in double figures, finishing with 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field and 2-for-4 from the 3-point line. Fifteen of those points came in the second half, and he has now scored 20-plus points in three of the last four games. The third-year junior bumped his scoring average against conference competition to 19.2 points per game.

Joining Strings in double figures for the Hornets were Nick Hornsby (17 points, 11 rebounds), Graves (13 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals) and Stuteville (12 points, four rebounds). Coupled with his 28-point, 14-rebound performance on Thursday at Southern Utah, Hornsby averaged 22.5 points and 12.5 rebounds during the week and will have a good chance at earning the Big Sky's player of the week award.

Sacramento State also finished with eight blocked shots, including three from Stuteville, two from Patton and two from Hornsby. Patton also had six points on 3-for-3 shooting in 13 minutes. Guard Izayah Mauriohooho-Le'afa chipped in three points, two assists, five rebounds and a steal. He also knocked down another 3-pointer and is now 8-for-10 from long range over the last three games.

Northern Arizona finished the game shooting .339 (21-62) from the field, .391 (9-23) from the 3-point line and .917 (11-12) from the free throw line. NAU's inside game was nearly nonexistent as the team had just 16 points in paint, including zero in the first half. The Lumberjacks were forced into 16 turnovers and the Hornets were able to convert those miscues into 17 points. Both teams finished with 38 rebounds.

The Lumberjacks had three players score in double figures, comprised of Martin (14 points, 16 rebounds, two steals), Mike Green (10 points, five assists) and Marcus DeBerry (10 points, five assists).

The Hornets complete their three-game road trip with a 2-1 record and the team wasn't far off from a perfect 3-0 mark. Last Saturday, Sacramento State trailed by just one point with two minutes to play at Portland State before eventually losing, 74-62.

The Hornets will now turn their attention to a season-high three-game homestand that begins next week against Montana State on Thursday and Montana on Saturday. Both games will tip-off at 7:05 p.m.
