VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS SECOND ROUND MATCHUP OVER GRAND CANYON, 3-0

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State outside hitters Morgan Stanley (17 kills, .342) and Shannon Boyle (16 kills, .387) combined for 33 kills and a .362 hitting percentage to lead the Hornets to a three-set sweep of Grand Canyon in the second round of the 14th annual Sacramento State Volleyball Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (6-7 overall) improved to 1-1 at the four-team tournament, and conclude the two-day event later this evening against Cal Poly at 7:30 p.m. Sacramento State opened the tourney yesterday with a 3-1 loss to Nevada. Heading into this evening's matchups, which includes Grand Canyon taking on Nevada at 5 p.m., Cal Poly is 2-0 at the event, both Nevada and the Hornets are 1-1, and Grand Canyon is 0-2.

The Hornets had 11 more kills (46-35) than the Antelopes, hit .296 as a team, and used a strong serve to throw Grand Canyon out of its offense. Sacramento State's .296 hitting percentage was the team's second largest output of the season as the Hornets had 46 kills with just 14 errors in 108 swings. Of Sacramento State's six starters, four hit better than .330.

The Hornets never trailed in the first set, and finished strong in both the second and third frames. That included an 11-4 run to close the second set and 11-6 to end the third.

Stanley's 17 kills tied her second largest output of the season, as she had just four errors in 38 swings, while also notching two aces, two blocks and six digs. She had eight kills and a .500 hitting percentage in the second set alone. Fellow outside hitter Boyle's .387 hitting percentage was a season high as she had just four errors in 31 swings. Boyle has recorded double figures in kills in 11 of her last 12 matches.

Setter Kennedy Kurtz had 34 assists, two aces and eight digs, and middle blocker Courtney Dietrich had five kills, two blocks and a .333 hitting percentage. Libero Lexie Skalbeck added a match-high 10 digs to go along with seven assists, Madeline Cannon had two aces, five digs and three blocks, and Brie Gathright chipped in three blocks. Brigitte Murdock had four digs.

Kurtz (2), Stanley (2) and Cannon (2) accounted for Sacramento State's six aces.

For Grand Canyon, Katrice Pond led the way with 11 kills and a .321 hitting percentage, and Natalie Tardy had 11 kills, two aces and five digs. Those two combined for 22 of Grand Canyon's 35 kills.
