MARTHALER’S BIG NIGHT LEADS VOLLEYBALL TO 3-1 ROAD WIN AT PORTLAND STATE

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Sophomore Victoria Marthaler posted career highs in both kills (28) and digs (14) to lead Sacramento State to a 3-1 road win (25-18, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22) at Portland State on Friday evening at Viking Pavilion.

Marthaler surpassed her previous career high of 26 kills, set earlier this season vs. Fresno State. The transfer from Weber State had just five errors in 58 swings while hitting .397. The 14 digs eclipsed her previous career best of nine, set last Saturday vs. Weber State.

Fittingly, it was Marthaler's 28th kill that ended the match as the Hornets closed the fourth set on a 3-0 run after the score had been tied at 22-22. In fact, it was Marthaler that also had a kill that gave the Hornets a 23-22 lead. Sacramento State closed the second set on a 6-2 run, and used a 9-3 run in the first to take control of that frame.

Just a sophomore, Marthaler has established herself as one of the top players in the Big Sky Conference, and she is now averaging a whopping 6.30 kills per set in league play. She has notched 17-plus kills in four straight matches despite the Hornets playing just 14 sets over that span.

Sacramento State improved to 9-6 overall and 2-1 in Big Sky play. Tonight began a stretch of a season-high three straight conference road matches. Dating back to last season, the Hornets have now won four straight against Portland State, a team that entered tonight's match at 2-0 in league.

The Hornets hit .322 in tonight's victory, the sixth time in the last seven matches the team has hit above .300. Sacramento State is now hitting a Big Sky-best .254 overall, and .312 against conference competition. That included hitting a massive .531 (18-1-32) in the fourth set this evening.

Marthaler accounted for nearly half the Hornets' kills (60), and middle blocker Ashlynn Archer accounted for 12 kills, three blocks and a .500 hitting percentage. Archer is now hitting .465 this season, the fifth best mark in the nation.

Setter Kate Doorn finished with 46 assists, a season-high tying 14 digs, and a career-best four kills. She hit .500, and quarterbacked a Hornet offense that was efficient all evening. The double-double was her sixth of the season, and 24th of her career.

Libero Reese Ampi finished with 18 digs and two aces, Keonahi'ilani Solaita had seven kills and season-best 10 digs, Mia Guevara posted two aces and a career-high 14 digs, and Skyler Gartin four kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Greta Davis added five kills, three digs and two stuffs.

The Hornets are back in action next week when they travel to Northern Colorado on Thursday (5 p.m. PT), and Northern Arizona on Saturday (1 p.m.).
