WOMEN'S GOLF FINISHES SECOND AT BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIPS

BOULDER CITY, Nev. — The Sacramento State women's golf recorded the best round in Big Sky Conference Championship history but its incredible charge came up one shot short of the team title during the final round on Wednesday at Boulder Creek Golf Club.

The Hornets entered the day trailing Idaho by five strokes but jumped the Vandals with an amazing start which saw the team as low as 10-under par during the round. Sacramento State finished the round with a total of 283 (5-under par) and had all five golfers of its golfers shoot 73 or better. The total broke the school single-round record of 286 which came earlier this year and marked just the second time in school history that the team posted a mark under 290. The score was also the lowest posted by a team in the history of the Big Sky Championships.

Sacramento State's three-round total of 291-295-283-869 also broke the school record and left the team at 5-over par for the tournament. The team destroyed the school record, shattering the previous mark of 882 by 13 strokes.

Idaho gained ground over the final five holes and finished first when Sophie Hausmann made a par putt on No. 18 and the Hornets finished with a bogey on the hole. That shot left Sacramento State in second place at the Big Sky Championships for the sixth time in the last eight years.

Freshman Julia Becker, who was playing just outside of her hometown of Las Vegas, led the way for the Hornets with a 4-under par round of 68. That performance tied the school single-round record which was held by Rockelle Sande (2015) and Sarah Kuykendall (2005). Becker opened with three pars and a bogey on the par-3 fourth. From there she birdied five of her next 12 holes and was mistake free over her final 14 holes. She had the largest jump of any player on the leaderboard, moving from a tie for 26th to a tie for 11th with a total of 74-77-68-219.

Sophomore Katie Dunaway ranked second on the team during the round with a 1-under 71 and tied for 33rd overall (228). On Wednesday, Dunaway birdied her first two holes and was 3-under through eight with four birdies and a bogey. A double bogey on the par-4 ninth left her a 1-under at the turn before she parred her first five holes on the back nine. Dunaway birdied Nos. 15 and 16 but closed with bogeys on Nos. 17 and 18.

Chloe Bartek and Rockelle Sande completed the team scorers with even par rounds of 72. Bartek finished in a tie for fifth place with a career best 54-hole total of 73-72-72-217 which is tied for the third lowest in school history. She was even through her first nine holes with a birdie and a bogey. On the back nine, she had a bogey on the par-4 11th, consecutive birdies on the par-4 14th and 15th and a bogey on No. 17.

Sande also cracked the school top 10 with a 54-hole total of 73-73-72-218. She was 1-under at the midway point on Wednesday but moved to 1-over with a double bogey on No. 11. The senior then recorded birdies on the par-5 13th, the par-4 15th and the par-5 16th to drop to 2-under for the round. She ended with a par on No. 17 and a double bogey on the par-4 18th.

Astha Madan also tied for fifth and set her career best at 71-73-73-217. Madan helped spark the team's early success by playing the first 16 holes at 2-under with birdies on the par-5 second and par-4 seventh along with 16 pars. However, she ended with a bogey on the par-3 17th and a double bogey on the par- 4 18th.

The final two holes proved costly for the team as the five Sacramento State golfers played Nos. 17 and 18 at 8-over par. In comparison, the team played the first 16 holes at 12-under par.
