WOMEN'S GOLF IN SECOND AT BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIPS, MADAN SHOOTS 71

BOULDER CITY, Nev. — The Sacramento State women's golf team sits in second place after counting four rounds of 74 or better during the opening round of the Big Sky Championships on Monday at Boulder Creek Golf Club. The Hornets totaled 291 as a team and are one stroke back of Northern Arizona for the lead.

Astha Madan led the way for Sacramento State with a 1-under round of 71. The sophomore was one of four golfers who finished under par during the day, and enters the second round tied for second — two strokes back of Montana State's Jaylee Tait. Madan bogeyed the par-5 second but played the remaining 16 holes at 2-under par with birdies on the par-3 fourth and par-5 13th.

Rockelle Sande and Chloe Bartek are tied for sixth after each shot 73. Sande started her day with a bogey on the par-4 first but moved to 1-under after birdies on the par-5 fifth and par-4 seventh. However, she jumped to 3-over with four bogeys on her next five holes. The senior bounced back with a birdie on the par-5 13th and 16th as well as four pars over her final six holes.

Bartek was steady throughout her round as she stayed within even and 2-over throughout the 18 holes. She began with a bogey-birdie combo and made the turn at 1-over. After a bogey on No. 10, she birdied the 13th and closed with five straight pars.

Freshman Julia Becker, who resides from nearby Las Vegas, shot 74 and is tied for 14th place. Becker was 2-over through her first five holes with a birde and three bogeys. She added a birdie on the par-3 eighth but had consecutive bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11 to move to 3-over. After four pars, she birdied the par-5 16th.

Katie Dunaway is tied for 42nd place with a round of 80 which included a birdie, seven bogeys and a double bogey.

NAU had two golfers shoot 71 and also counted a 73 to claim the team lead. The remainder of the top five is comprised of Idaho (295), Southern Utah (299) and Northern Colorado (302).

The second round will get under way at 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning. The Hornets will once again be paired with Idaho and Northern Arizona.
