SEAL BEACH, Calif. — Sophomores Katie Dunaway and Astha Madan led the Sacramento State women's golf team during the first and second rounds, respectively of The Gold Rush tournament on Monday at the Old Ranch Country Club. Dunaway shot 74 in the opening round while Madan carded an even-par round of 72 in the afternoon.
Sacramento State is in sixth place heading into the final round of the 15-team tournament on Tuesday. The Hornets shot 305-302-607 and are trailing USC, Fresno State, host Long Beach State, Colorado State and BYU. USC, which entered the tournament as the nation's No. 1 team in the Golfstat rankings, shot 286-285-571 and has a 16-stroke advantage over Fresno State. The Trojans also account for five of the top six individuals including 17th-ranked Robynn Ree who is the individual leader at 70-71-141.
During the first round, Dunaway started the tournament with a par on the 12th hole before bogeying the par-4 13th. A birdie immediately followed on the par-5 14th and she moved to 1-under with a birdie on the par-4 18th. The sophomore returned to even following a bogey on the par-4 third and remained there until a double-bogey on the par-3 seventh. Dunaway earned of the strokes back after birdying the par-4 eighth but closed her round with a bogey on the par-3 11th.
Madan was 3-over through her first nine holes following bogeys on Nos. 11, 15 and 18. She started the front side of the course with a birdie on the par-4 first to move to 2-under but added two bogeys and six pars over her final eight holes.
Freshman Julia Becker started hot, playing her first nine holes at 1-under par. Becker birdied the par-5 14th before a bogey on the par-3 15th. She then bogeyed the par-3 15th before returning to the red with a birdie on No. 17. Becker encountered some trouble on her final nine holes starting with a double bogey on the par-4 third. She then had four bogeys over her final six holes.
Bartek shot 78 in the first round with birdies on the par-5 ninth and par-4 12th along with eight bogeys. Sande completed the scores with a round of 79. Sande had birdies on Nos. 16 and 18 to highlight her round. She also had six bogeys and a triple bogey.
Madan overcame back-to-back bogeys on her first two holes of the second round to finish with a 72. The sophomore birdied the par-4 12th and made the turn at 1-over following six pars. Bogeys on Nos. 1 and 3 jumped her to 3-over but she rallied with three birdies and three pars over the final six holes. During the stretch, Madan had birdies on the par-3 fifth as well as the par-5 sixth and ninth. Her 36-hole total of 76-72-148 has her tied for 17th.
Dunaway is one stroke back (74-75-149) and is tied for 21st. Her second round featured three birdies and six bogeys. She was 3-over through her first seven holes before she birdied Nos. 1 and 2. From there, she had bogeys on either side of a stretch of seven consecutive pars.
Becker and Bartek are tied for 45th after both totaled 155 and are tied for 45th place. Becker shot 78 during the second round with a birdie on the par-3 fifth and seven bogeys. Bartek had birdies on the par-4 fourth and par-5 16th along with seven bogeys to card a 5-over par 77 in the afternoon round.
Sande recorded the lone eagle for the team during the day as she blistered the 442-yard, par-5 16th hole. However, she also had nine pars, six pars and two double bogeys. She's currently tied for 60th at 79-80-159.
