STOCKTON, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team counted four scores of 72 or better during the final round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invite to tie for second place in the tournament. Aaron Beverly and Connor Day each shot 70 (1-under par) on Saturday to lead the Hornets. Devyn Fitchhorn added a round of 71 and Robert Parden shot 72 to help the team finish at 1-under par for the day.
BYU, which entered the tournament ranked 45th in Div. I, pulled away from the field to claim the team title. The Cougars shot 282-277-275-834 (18-under par) and finish 16 strokes ahead of the Hornets and Grand Canyon. Long Beach State placed fourth with a three-day total of 853.
Beverly tied for second overall after shooting 67-69-70-206. The 54-hole total was the lowest of his career and marked the fifth time he's totaled 208 or lower. He started his final round with four pars and made the turn at 2-under with birdies on the par-4 fifth and ninth holes. On the back nine, he had bogeys on the par-3 11th and 15th to move back to even but closed with a birdie on the par-5 16th and two pars.
Day posted his best round of tournament on Saturday and tied for 49th overall at 72-79-70-221. He started strong with three birdies and three pars over his first six holes. However, he was even at the midway point of his round with a bogey on No. 7 and a double bogey on the par-3 eighth. Day settled down over the final nine holes with eight pars and a birdie on No. 16. His round was tied for the third lowest in his Sacramento State career.
Fitchhorn was even during the third round. The freshman parred his first five holes before a bogey on the par-4 sixth. He followed with nine consecutive pars and then fell back to even with a birdie on No. 16. Fitchhorn tied for 21st at 70-74-71-215.
Parden provided the final score towards the team score on Saturday with a 1-over par round of 72. The senior was 2-over through his first six holes with two bogeys and four pars before a birdie on the par-4 seventh. However, he immediately bogeyed Nos. 8 and 9 and stood at 3-over through nine holes. On the back nine, Parden had seven pars as well as birdies on the par-3 11th and par-4 12th. His total of 70-72-72-214 tied him for 17th place in the tournament.
Wonje Choi tied for 37th after shooting 71-74-74-219. His final round was comprised of three birdies, 11 pars, two bogeys and two double bogeys.
Sacramento State will conclude the fall portion of its schedule at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational in Maui from Nov. 4-6.
