BECKER LEADS WOMEN'S GOLF IN FINAL ROUND OF COWGIRL DESERT

PALM DESERT, Calif. — Led by a 1-over par round of 73 from freshman Julia Becker, the Sacramento State women's golf team wrapped up play at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Sunday. The Hornets shot 306 during the round and finished in sixth place with a total of 917.

Becker was three strokes better than the rest of her teammates during the third round. She started with with four consecutive pars before a bogey on the par-4 eighth. Two more pars came before a bogey on the par-4 11th. Becker returned to even after birdying the par-3 12th and the par-5 14th. She stayed there following a bogey on the par-4 16th and a birdie on the par-5 18th. Becker closed her round with two pars and a bogey on the par-4 third. Overall, she tied for 25th after shooting 76-82-73-231.

Sophomore Astha Madan ranked second on the team with a round of 76 on Sunday. Madan was even through her first six holes but quickly jumped to 5-over with three bogeys and a double bogey over her next five holes. A birdie on the par-5 14th was followed by bogeys on Nos. 15 and 17. Standing at 6-over, Madan birdied the par-5 18th and par-4 first to end her day. Madan finished the tournament at 79-74-76-229 to tie for 18th place.

Fellow sophomore Katie Dunaway also tied for 18th place after shooting 76-75-78-229. Dunaway ran into some trouble in the early portion of her round with double bogeys on the par-3 second and par-5 fourth. She earned one stroke back with a birdie on the par-5 ninth and made the turn at 3-over. On the back nine, she had three bogeys to go with six pars.

Rockelle Sande and Natalie Bodnar tied for 41st place with each totaling 235 over three rounds. Bodnar shot 79 in the third round consisting of a birdie on the par-3 sixth and eight bogeys. Sande shot 80 in the third round with two birdies, four bogeys and three double bogeys.

UC Riverside and San Jose State tied for the team title with each team totaling 894. The remainder of the top five was comprised of Northern Arizona (904), Santa Clara (914) and Cal Poly (916).

Sacramento State will next compete at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational in Tacoma, Wash., beginning on Oct. 12.
