PALM DESERT, Calif. — The Sacramento State women's golf team showcased their stability both individually and as a team during the first two rounds of the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Sunday. The Hornets are third heading into the final round on Sunday after shooting 307-304-611.
San Jose State and UC Riverside separated themselves from the field during the first two rounds. SJSU totaled 597 on Saturday and have a one-stroke lead over UCR. UC Irvine and Cal Poly are tied for fourth and are one stroke behind Sacramento State.
In the first round, Katie Dunaway, Natalie Bodnar and Julia Becker each shot 76 to lead Sacramento State. The team also counted a 79 from Astha Madan. The second round saw Madan pace the team with a 74 while Dunaway and Rockelle Sande shot 75. Badnar posted a round of 80 to account for the final score towards the team total.
Dunaway is tied for 12th overall in the field. The sophomore had a birdie, three bogeys and a double bogey in the first round. She was 2-over through 17 holes before carding a seven on the par-4 fourth hole. Her second round was highlighted by three consecutive birdies on holes Nos. 16-18. She also had three bogeys and a triple bogey on the par-4 seventh.
Madan shot 79-74-153 and is tied for 19th place. She was 1-over through her first 12 holes but ran into some trouble, playing her final six holes at 6-over par. Her second round started with back-to-back birdies on the Nos. 7 and 8 and bogeys on Nos. 9 and 10. She finished with three birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey.
Sande played her first seven holes of the day at 6-over before a birdie on the par-4 16th. She remained there until a bogey on No. 2 and a double bogey on the par-4 seventh. An eagle on the par-5 14th dropped her to 1-under through seven holes. Two bogeys and double bogey closed her round at 3-over.
Bodnar played her first 36-hole day since the spring of 2014 and is tied for 29th. Bodnar's first round had a birdie on the par-4 13th and five bogeys. She was just 1-over through nine holes in the second round but played her final nine holes at 7-over with a birdie, five bogeys and a triple bogey. Bodnar is tied for 29th place.
Freshman Julia Becker rounds out the group and is tied for 43rd place overall. Becker was steady in the morning with two bogeys and a double bogey. In the second round she had two birdies, seven bogeys, a double bogey and triple bogey.
