PULLMAN, Wash. — The Sacramento State women's golf team had all five of its golfers finish within one stroke of each other during the third round of the WSU Cougar Cup on Tuesday at Palouse Ridge Golf Club. The Hornets shot 307 as a team during the final round and tied for fourth place in the 12-team tournament.
Katie Dunaway led the team with a round of 76. Julia Becker, Astha Madan, Rockelle Sande and Chloe Bartek each recorded rounds of 77. The team score was 17 strokes off the pace of the Hornets' school-record tying round of 290 which came during the second round on Monday. Sacramento State concluded the tournament at 300-290-307-897 which marked the third best three-round score in school history.
Host Washington State pulled way from the field to win the tournament by 14 strokes. The Cougars finished the third round at 3-under par and were 2-over par for the tournament. Idaho placed second with a three-round total of 880 and were followed by Fresno State (897). Montana State tied for fourth along with Sacramento State.
Dunaway had a tough start to her day with a double bogey on her first hole (No. 5) and a bogey on the par-3 sixth. She eventually stood at 5-over through 10 holes before playing her final eight holes at 1-under. The sophomore birdied the par-4 second and had seven pars during the stretch. Her three-round total of 73-73-76-222 tied her for 14th place overall and set her career 54-hole best.
Becker, who was competing in her first college tournament, tied for 17th place at 73-73-77-223. On Tuesday, the freshman started with consecutive pars on Nos. 4 and 5. A bogey on the par-3 sixth and double bogey on the par-4 eighth moved her to 3-over. She earned a stroke back with a birdie on the par-4 12th but could pull no closer. Her round ended with a bogey on the par-4 15th, a double bogey on the par-5 18th and seven pars.
Madan was steady during the third round with five bogeys to go along with 12 pars. The sophomore played the front nine holes of the course at 1-over but had four bogeys over holes Nos. 10-18. Her three-round total of 74-77-77-228 tied her for 29th place.
Senior Rockelle Sande followed her second round 72 with a 77 and tied for 32nd place overall (80-72-77-229). Sande was even through her first six holes with a birdie on the par-5 10th, a bogey on the par-5 ninth and four pars. Back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 12 and 13 and another on the par-4 15th jumped her to 3-over. Following three pars, she bogeyed the par-4 first and later the par-5 fifth.
Junior Chloe Bartek had the most birdies among the Sacramento State golfers during the day. Bartek birdied the par-3 13th as well as the par-4 first. She also had five bogeys and a double bogey on the par-5 18th. Her three rounds of 82-72-77-231 tied her for 38th place.
Washington State's Cherokee Kim was the medalist after shooting 69-69-73-211 to finish 5-under par.
Sacramento State will have a quick turnaround as the team will compete at the Cowgirl Desert Classic in Palm Desert, Calif., beginning on Saturday, Sept. 26.
