PULLMAN, Wash. — Freshman Julia Becker and sophomore Katie Dunaway each shot two rounds of 73 to lead the Sacramento State women's golf team in the first two rounds of the WSU Cougar Cup on Monday at Palouse Ridge Golf Club. The three-round tournament, which is the first event for the Hornets this season, will conclude with a single round on Tuesday.
Sacramento State totaled 300 in the first round and tied the school record of 290 in the second round and currently sits in fourth place. The second round score matched the total set in the second round of the 2007 Big Sky Championships.
The Hornets are nine strokes back of host Washington State for the top spot. Fresno State totaled 586 and is second while fellow Big Sky Conference member Idaho is third at 587.
Individually, Becker and Dunaway are tied for eighth place with 36-hole totals of 146. Washington State's Cherokee Kim shot 69-69-138 and holds a 1-stroke advantage over Martine Edberg of Cal State Fullerton who shot 74-65-139.
In the first round, Becker and Dunaway led the team while the Hornets also counted a round of 74 from Astha Madan and an 80 from Rockelle Sande. In the second round, junior Chloe Bartek and Sande each shot 72 to finish at even par. Combined with Becker and Dunaway's rounds of 73, the team finished at 2-over par.
Becker began her collegiate career with a par on the par-5 ninth before consecutive birdies on the par-5 10th and par-3 11th dropped her to 2-under. She gave a stroke back with a bogey on the par-4 12th and returned to even following a bogey on the par-3 16th. A birdie on the par-5 17th made her 1-under at the midway point of her round. She bogeyed three of her next six holes before ending her round with a birdie on the par-4 eighth.
Her second round started with six pars and a bogey over her first seven holes. She then birdied the par-3 16th and the par-5 17th to move to 1-under. Following a par, she bogeyed Nos. 1 and 2. Three pars came before a birdie on the par-3 sixth which moved her to even. However, she bogeyed the par-4 seventh and parred No. 8 to close her day.
In the morning round, Dunaway parred her first four holes and remained at even through eight holes with a birdie, two pars and a bogey. She birdied the par-5 17th before a double bogey on the par-5 18th. Dunaway moved back to even following a birdie on the par-4 second and stayed there until bogeying the par-4 eighth. Her second round started with a bogey on No. 9 but she followed with five straight pars. Over the next nine holes she had four birdies, for bogeys and a par to remain at 1-over before parring her final three holes.
Madan is tied for 27th overall at 77-74-151. She opened her day with two pars before a birdie on No. 12 and made the turn even following a bogey on No. 18. On the front nine holes, she had a birdie on the par-3 fourth, six pars, a bogey and a double bogey. In the second round, she played her first nine holes at 2-over (two bogeys). She closed on the front side of the course with a birdie on the par-3 fourth, four pars and four bogeys.
Senior Rockelle Sande shot 80-72-152 and is tied for 29th place. Sande's first round consisted of four bogeys and a quadruple bogey on the par-5 fifth. Her second round also started slowly with bogeys on Nos. 8 and 9. An eagle on the par-5 10th jump started her charge and brought her back to even. She moved into the red with a birdie on the par-4 14th and an eagle on the par-4 15th. After a par, Sande lipped out a third eagle attempt before settling for a birdie which dropped her to 4-under. She remained there until a triple bogey on No. 5 and a bogey on No. 7.
Bartek recorded rounds of 82-72-154 and is tied for 38th place. Her opening round had eight pars and 10 bogeys. She picked up her first birdie of the day on the par-3 11th and added three more on the back side of the course (Nos. 14, 15 and 17). Bartek played her final seven holes at 2-over with a birdie on the par-4 second and three bogeys.
