ANGELS CAMP, Calif. — Led by a 2-under par round of 70 from Luke Kristo, the Sacramento State men's golf team was able to improve its score by two strokes during the second round of the Big Sky Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday at Greenhorn Creek Resort.
The Hornets remained in second place but saw its deficit grow to 12 strokes behind Idaho. The Vandals shot 3-under par as a team during the second round and have a two-round total of 295-285-580. Sacramento State has shot 297-295-592 and is followed by Southern Utah (305-291-596), Weber State (302-297-599) and Hartford (306-302-608) in the top five.
Kristo jumped into a tie for fifth place at 75-70-145. His second round began with three birdies and an eagle on the 494-yard par-5. Following two more pars, he birdied the next four holes to move to 6-under. The senior then bogeyed the par-4 11th and eventually returned to 1-under following a double bogey on the par-4 14th and bogeys on Nos. 15 and 16. He finished the day with a par on No. 17 and a birdie on the par-5 18th. During the first two rounds of the tournament, Kristo is playing the 10 par-5 holes at 8-under par.
Aaron Beverly is tied for seventh with a two-round total of 74-73-147. Beverly started strong with birdies on the par-4 first and par-5 fourth and made the turn at 1-under. An eagle on the par-5 10th was immediately followed by a double bogey on No. 11 and a birdie on the par-4 12th. Two bogeys on Nos. 13 and 14 brought him back to even where he remained until a double bogey on the par-4 17th. Beverly was also able to birdie the par-5 18th to conclude his round at 1-over.
Taylor Knoll is tied for 13th place following his second consecutive round of 76. Knoll played the front nine at 3-over with a birdie, two bogeys and a double bogey. After moving to 6-over through 15 holes, the sophomore parred No. 16 and birdied Nos. 17 and 18.
Senior Riley Hayfield matched Knoll's total and is also tied for 13th. Hayfield, who led the team with a round of 72 on Monday, shot 78 on Tuesday. His round was comprised of a birdie on the par-5 fourth, nine pars, seven bogeys and a double bogey.
Freshman Zach Liberatore is tied for 21st at 79-76-155. Liberatore was 7-over through his first 13 holes but closed with birdies on the par-3 15th, par-4 16th and par-5 18th.
Idaho's Jared du Toit holds the individual lead after shooting 73-69-142. He is followed by teammate Aaron Cockerill, Southern Utah's Nic Booth and Weber State's Devon Purser who each totaled 144.
The third and final round of the championship will begin at 7:30 a.m. Sacramento State will be paired with Idaho and Southern Utah beginning at 8:15 a.m. The winner of the tournament will earn an automatic berth to an NCAA Regional.
