DAVIS, Calif. — For the third consecutive round at the El Macero Classic, the Sacramento State men's golf team was led by a different player. On Sunday, sophomore Aaron Beverly posted the low number with a round of 72.
Sacramento State finished tied for the second with Marquette in the team standings. The Horents shot 295-282-298-875 and finished 10 strokes behind UC Davis for the team title. The rest of the top five was comprised of Utah Valley (881) and Nevada (887).
Individually, Taylor Knoll placed second after matching his career 54-hole best at 69-70-75-214. Knoll now has a pair of top two finishes this spring as he tied for first at the Folino Invitational in February. On Sunday, the El Dorado Hills, Calif., native got off to a slow start with three bogeys and a double bogey over his first seven holes. He rebounded by playing the final 11 holes at 2-under with birdies on the par-4 10th and par-5 15th along with nine pars.
Senior Riley Hayfleld followed his second-round 69 with a 2-over par round of 74 on Sunday. Hayfield tied for 12th overall with a three-round total of 78-69-74-221. Hayfield also had his trouble on the front nine, making the turn at 3-over. He started the back nine with a birdie on the par-4 10th and moved to 1-over following a birdie on the par-5 15th. However, Hayfield bogeyed the following hole before closing his round with a pair of pars.
Beverly finished tied for 16th place after his best round of the tournament. On Sunday, Beverly birdied the par-5 second hole and remained at 1-under until a double bogey on the par-4 sixth. A bogey on No. 7 took him to 2-over before he birdied the par-4 ninth. Another birdie on No. 10 dropped him to even. After three pars, he traded a bogey on No. 14 with a birdie on 15 and ended with three more pars.
Sophomore Robert Parden tied for 24th after shooting 76-71-77-224. Parden's final round consisted of three birdies, four bogeys and two double bogeys. Freshman Zach Liberatore, who was competing as an individual, matched Parden's total and also tied for 24th. Liberatore shot 79 on Sunday with two birdies, five bogeys and a pair of double bogeys.
Luke Kristo and Cody Bates tied for 30th and 36th, respectively. Kristo had an adventurous third round which included an eagle on the par-5 15th, two birdies, six bogeys and a quadruple bogey on No. 18. Bates shot 77 during the third round with a birdie, four bogeys and a double bogey.
Sacramento State will next compete at the Big Sky Conference Championships on April 27-29. The three-round event will be held at the Greenhorn Creek Golf Club in Angles Camp. Calif.
