LAKESIDE, Calif. — With a school-record low score during the opening round, the Sacramento State men's golf team made an immediate splash during its first competition of the spring on Monday at the Borona Collegiate Cup. The Hornets shot 274 in the first round to take the team lead but saw it disappear during a darkness-shortened second round. The score broke the previous Sacramento State record of 276 which came in the third round of the Pacific Invitational on Oct. 31, 2012.
Sacramento State was one of four schools to complete its second round and ended the day shooting 274-301 which left the team at 1-under par. San Diego is currently 15-under and has opened at 2-stroke advantage of host San Diego State. The second round will conclude on Tuesday morning and will be immediately followed by the third round.
Aaron Beverly paced the Hornets during their hot start. Beverly shot a career best 66 and was aided by a six-hole stretch which he played a 7-under. Two pars and a pair of bogeys started the sophomore's day before he birdied the par-4 14th and 15th to start his run. A birdie on the par-3 16th was followed by another on the par-5 17th. The streak continued with an eagle on the par-4 18th and a birdie on the par-5 first. Following two pars, he added birdies on Nos. 4 and 6 before a bogey on the par-3 seventh and two pars ended his round. The Fairfield, Calif., native became just the 10th golfer in school history record a round of 66 or better and the first since Jordan Weir in 2013.
Beverly shot 76 in the second round and is tied for 12th overall. His second round was comprised of three birdies, 10 pars, four bogeys and a triple bogey.
Tyler Knoll and Riley Hayfield are currently tied for 23rd place with a 36-hole total of 146. Knoll shot 67-78 while Hayfield recorded rounds of 69-76. Knoll began the opening round with three consecutive birdies on holes Nos. 12-14 and stood at 5-under after a birdies on the par-4 first and fifth. He played his last six holes even with a birdie on No. 9, four pars and a bogey. His round of 67 tied his career low at Sacramento State. In the afternoon round, Knoll found himself five over through six holes after a triple bogey on No. 17. However, he played the remaining 12 holes at even par to remain among the team leaders.
Hayfield was the third Hornet to break 70 in the opening round. The senior began with a birdie on No. 13 but immediately followed with consecutive bogeys to move to 1-over. He remained there until a birdie on the par-5 sixth. That began a streak where he birdied five of his final seven holes to end the round at 3-under. Hayfield started his second round with pars on eight of his first nine holes. The exception was a birdie on the par-3 second. His final nine holes were comprised of a birdie, three pars, four bogeys and a double bogey.
Senior Luke Kristo shot even-par 72 in the first round and added a round of 74 to lead the team in the afternoon. Kristo's morning started with two birdies on Nos. 12 and 13 and a third on No. 17 to lead him at 3-under through his first nine holes. Three bogeys on a six-hole stretch returned him to even where he remained for the rest of the round. Kristo started the second round with a bogey on No. 11 but moved to 3-under following birdies on Nos. 18-2. A double-bogey on the par-5 sixth brought him back to even and he added two more bogeys on Nos. 7 and 8.
Robert Parden completed the lineup with rounds of 76-75 to tie for 57th during the opening day. Parden started with a bogey on the 11th hole and was never able to get even for the rest of the round. He finished his opening 18 holes with three birdies, four bogeys and a triple bogey. His 75 in the second round was the second best score on the team. The second time through the sophomore birdied the 11th and stayed at 1-under until a bogey on the par-3 16th and a double bogey on No. 18. He had two combinations of birdie-bogey to stay at 2-over before he bogeyed the par-4 ninth.
