CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team captured its first tournament title of the season and Taylor Knoll and Aaron Beverly shared co-medalist honors at the Folino Invitational on Tuesday.
The Hornets won the three-round event by 13 shots over Seattle. Sacramento State shot an even-par 288 during the final round on Tuesday and finished the event with a total of 294-293-288-875.
Individually, Knoll shot 69 during the final round and had a 54-hole total of 215. Beverly also matched that mark after shooting 74 on Tuesday. The pair were joined atop the leaderboard by Boise State's Ty Travis.
"We played real solid," Sacramento State head coach Christopher Hall said. "We knew coming down that we had a great opportunity to win and it is good to see the guys go out there and play with a style that backed up that mindset.
"Our goal today was to be better on holes 4-7 and we did that. We were 1-over today compared to 8-over in the last two rounds."
Knoll began his final round with a par on No. 13 before a bogey on the par-4 14th. He got to 1-under with birdies on the par-4 16th and par-5 18th before returning to even with a bogey on the par-4 fourth. Following two pars, Knoll began a stretch where he birdied three of four holes beginning with the par-4 seventh. He also recorded a birdie on the par-5 eighth and 10th to finish at 69.
Beverly capped his tournament with a 2--over par round of 74. The sophomore was 1-over through his first nine holes with eight pars and a bogey on the par-4 12th. His lone birdie of the round came on the par-3 fifth. His 54-hole total of 215 was his third-lowest of his career and tie for first place marked his first top-five finish as a Hornet.
Sophomore Robert Parden jumped into the top 10 with a ninth place finish after shooting 77-73-72-222. Parden's third-round score was the second best on the team and was the most consistent. He started his round with 11 pars before a bogey on the par-4 seventh. Two more pars came before a birdie on the par-4 11th. An addition two pars gave him 16 for the round.
Senior Luke Kristo tied for 13th overall in the tournament after shooting 77-73-73-223. Kristo shot his second consecutive 73 with a round that featured three birdies and four bogeys. He was 2-under after a birdie on the par-4 first and stayed there through the fifth until three bogeys over his final six holes.
Senior Riley Hayfield completed the squad by shooting 77 on Tuesday. Hayfield's scorecard featured four birdies, five bogeys and a quadruple bogey.
Sacramento State will next be in action at the Del Walker Intercollegiate on Mar. 2-3 in Long Beach, Calif.
