BEVERLY, MEN'S GOLF IN FIRST PLACE AFTER OPENING DAY OF FOLINO

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. — Helped by a 4-under par first round, sophomore Aaron Beverly and the Sacramento State men's golf team each have at least a share of first place following the first day of the Folino Invitational on Monday.

The start of the tournament was delayed by morning fog and Sacramento State was one of only three teams to complete its second round before darkness settled in. The team shot 294 in the opening round and followed with a round of 293. The Hornets finished at 11-over par and lead British Columbia by three strokes. Boise State (+19), Grand Canyon (+22) and UC Santa Barbara (+23) complete the top five. However, each of those squads remain on the course.

Beverly's total of 141 ties his with Nate Ollis of British Columbia at 3-under. The Fairfield, Calif., native was bogey free in the opening round with four birdies and 14 pars. Beverly birdied two of his first five holes, recording twos on the par-3 13th and 15th. A birdie on the par-5 18th and par-4 second made him 4-under through 10 holes. He then parred his final eight holes.

In the second round, Beverly birdied the par-4 11th (his first hole) but was 1-over after consecutive bogeys on No. 13 and the par-4 14th. He returned to even with another birdie on No. 18 and moved back into the red with a second birdie on No. 2. His final eight holes were comprised of six pars and bogeys on the par-3 fifth and par-5 sixth.

Taylor Knoll shot 72-74-146 and is currently tied for sixth place. Knoll started his day with a double-bogey on the par-3 13th before five straight pars. An eagle on the par-5 first and a birdie on the par-4 third moved him to 1-under. Three holes later, Knoll was once again 1-over with bogeys on Nos. 5 and 6. A birdie on the par-5 eighth and a bogey on the par-3 ninth kept him there until he birdied the par-4 11th to finish the round even.

Knoll was 2-over in the second round with four birdies, two bogeys and a pair of double bogeys. He was even through his first 11 holes but quickly moved to 4-over after bogeys on Nos. 5 and 7 and a double bogey on No. 6. The sophomore salvaged the round with a birdie on the par-5 eighth and another on the par-4 11th.

Luke Kristo and Robert Parden each shot 77-73-150 and are tied for 18th place. Kristo was forced to scramble at the end of his first round to get to 5-over. The senior was 7-over with only three holes to play before birdies on the par-5 10th and par-4 11th. He was 1-under at the midway point of his second round but jumped to 1-over with a double bogey on the par-4 third. Following a bogey on No. 5, he birdied the par-4 sixth and par-5 eighth to move back to even. However, he finished at 1-over following a bogey on the par-3 ninth.

Parden started on the 14th hole with a par and was even through the second hole with consecutive bogeys (Nos. 15-16) and pars (Nos. 18-1). He played his final 11 holes at 5-over with three bogeys and a double bogey. His second round had only five pars to go along with six birdies and seven bogeys.

Riley Hayfled shot 79-83-162 and is 51st to complete the Hornet lineup. Hayfield had 11 pars and seven bogeys in the first round before a birdie, 10 pars, three bogeys, three double bogeys and a triple bogey in the afternoon.
