SANDE, DUNAWAY SHOOT 74 IN FIRST ROUND OF RAINBOW WAHINE

OAHU, Hawaii — Senior Rockelle Sande and sophomore Katie Dunaway each shot 74 to lead Sacramento State during the first round of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Tuesday at Leilehua Golf Course.

The Hornets counted four scores of 76 or better and are in fourth place with a team total of 299. Mississippi totaled 294 and leads BYU by one stroke. South Dakota State is third at 297.

Sande started with back-to-back pars on the eighth and ninth holes before a birdie on the par- 4 10th. However, she bogeyed five of the next eight holes and stood at 4-over heading back to the first tee. Following two pars, the senior birdied the par-5 third and par-4 fourth to move to 2-over. She ended her day with three pars.

Dunway had double bogeys on two of her first six holes and was 5-over following a bogey on the par-4 14th hole. From there, she played her final nine holes at 3-under with birdies on the par-5 15th, par-4 16th and par-4 fourth.

Freshman Julia Becker was one stroke back of the pair and is tied for 21st after shooting 75. Becker was steady during the first round with two birdies and five bogeys. She was 5-over par  before recording birdies on Nos. 5 and 6 and parring her final two holes.

The final score towards the team total came from Astha Madan's 76. Madan opened with a bogey on the her first hole (No. 6). She parred the next seven holes before bogeying Nos. 14, 15 and 18. A birdie on the par-5 third  earned her a stroke back but she closed with a bogey on the par-3 fifth.

Natalie Bodnar, who is competing as an individual in the tournament, matched the score posted by Dunaway and Sande with a 74. That score tied her career best which came at the Anteater Invitational in 2013. The senior was 2-over through her first four holes before a birdie on the par-3 17th. She eventually stood at 3-over through 12 holes but then birdied the par-4 seventh and eighth. A bogey on No. 9 was followed by three pars.
