LAKEWOOD, Wash. — Sophomore Katie Dunaway recorded an even-par round of 72 in the first round and junior Chloe Bartek was 2-over par in the second round to lead the Sacramento State women's golf team during the first day of the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational on Monday at Tacoma Country & Golf Club.
The Hornets struggled through the morning round with only Dunaway breaking 80 en route to a total of 314. Things improved in the second round where Sacramento State shot 309 allowing the team to move into eighth place heading into the final round.
Dunaway bogeyed the par-4 fifth to start her opening round but found herself even or below par for most of the round. A birdie on the par-5 ninth was followed by four consecutive pars. She then birdied the par-4 14th to drop to 1-under par. A bogey on the par-3 17th returned her to even before a birdie on the par-4 second. Dunaway was 1-under heading into her final hole of the first round but bogeyed the par-4 fourth to finish with a 72.
The fourth hole provided her only birdie of the second round as she also had six bogeys and two double bogeys for an 81. Her 36-hole total of 153 ties her for 19th place.
Bartek shot 82 in the first round with a birdie, seven bogeys and two double bogeys but came back for a 2-over par 74 in the afternoon. In the round, she was 3-over through four holes after a double bogey on the par-4 10th and a bogey on the par-4 12th. From there, she recorded birdies on the par-5 16th and par-4 seventh and also had a bogey. She is tied for 37th at 82-74-156.
Senior Rockelle Sande and sophomore Astha Madan each shot 80-77-157 and are tied for 37th place. In the first round, Madan had eight bogeys to accompany 10 pars. Sande was less consistent with three birdies, seven bogeys and two double bogeys. Madan continued in the afternoon with three birdies, six bogeys and a double bogey. Sande was sparked by an eagle on the par-4 fourth, two birdies, seven bogeys and a double bogey.
Freshman Julia Becker completed the scoring in both rounds at 82-81-163 and is tied for 64th. Becker's first round was comprised of two birdies, four bogeys and four double bogeys. Her second round had a birdie on the par-5 18th along with seven bogeys and a triple bogey on the par-4 13th.
Washington accounted for the top four individuals during the first two rounds and the Huskies have opened a 24 shot lead over Idaho in the team standings. UW totaled 286-294-580 and is 4-over par. The team was paced by Julianne Alvarez who is the individual leader after shooting 72-71-143.
Sacramento State finds itself four strokes behind host Seattle and Big Sky foe Weber State for second place. The Hornets rank third among the six Big Sky Conference schools in the 16-team field.
