ANDREWS WINS AGAINS; ABUBAKARI INTO THE TOP 10 TO START WEEKEND

Hornets competed at pair of meets on Thursday in SoCal swing

LONG BEACH, Calif. — The Sacramento State track and field teams started a busy four-meet weekend by taking part in the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at Long Beach State and the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific on Thursday.

Jamar Andrews, Jr., claimed another victory in the men's triple jump and Asha Abubakari moved into fifth place in program history in the women's discus to lead the team at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.

Andrews jumped 49-08.25 to win the triple jump for the third time in as many meets this outdoor season. The freshman, who leads the Big Sky and ranks fourth nationally, won the event by three inches but was still shy of his PR of 53-01.00.

Abubakari threw 162-03 in the discus which was over a 12-foot improvement on her previous career best. The mark jumped her past teammate Galadriel Mellion for fifth in the Hornet record book. Mellion threw 162-00 at the Jim Bush Legends Meet at UCLA.

The trio of Hope Gordon, Abubakari and Jordan Bailey also set PRs in the women's shot put. Gordon had nearly a 17-inch improvement of her best which came in 2024. Abubarki topped her PR of 41-09.25 with a put of 42-11.50 while Bailey bettered her career best by 10.75 inches at 40-04.00.

The other notable performance for the women came in the high jump where freshman Merle Weber cleared 5-06.00 which is the best mark by a Hornet this season.

In the men's shot Emmaniel Akutey surpassed 50-feet for the first time in his career. Akutey blew past that mark with a put of 51-00.25. His previous best was 40-04.50 at last season's Causeway Classic Dual.

The team had only one competitor at the Bryan Clay Invitational where Anna Harmon completed the 10K in 36:02.35 in the morning.

The team will continue the Bryan Clay Invitational tomorrow while also competing at the Mt. SAC Relays and Beach Invitational.
